The intercity passenger train service is operated by Amtrak Amtrak, the National Railroad Passenger Corp., authorized to operate virtually all intercity passenger railroad routes in the United States. Amtrak was created by Congress in 1970 in response to more than two decades of continuous operating deficits by privately run under contract to the CCJPA and is funded through the California Business, Transportation & Housing Agency. Capitol Corridor ridership has grown 133 percent in the past 48 months and the route is now the third busiest intercity passenger train service in the country, transporting almost 1.2 million passengers annually. Newly elected BART Board President Pete Snyder was elected Vice-Chair of the CCJPA Board for the next two years. Snyder has been a member of the CCJPA Board since its inception and was the first mayor of Dublin in Alameda County. He has been a strong supporter of increased Capitol Corridor service, especially to San Jose. Snyder also strongly supports the Capitol Corridor intermodal "free transfer program," with local transit agencies along the corridor as well as connections with BART at Richmond, and, within the next 18 months, at Oakland Coliseum. BART tickets are sold to ticketed Capitol Corridor riders for a 20 percent discount in the club/cafe cars. Beginning Jan. 6, the Capitol Corridor will operate 22 trains on weekdays and 18 trains on weekends and holidays. This is the highest level of service in the history of the Capitol Corridor.
