Atwood is still on the defence trail.

IT was not a day for the faint-hearted at the West End Open bowls tournament, but there was a lot of quality play despite heavy conditions.

Holder Andrew Atwood moved closer to becoming the first person to successfully defend the title when he devastated 2001 winner Steve Batten 21-2. Pontyclun's Gavyn Fielding added another notable scalp when he saw off Troedyhriw's David K Jones 21-17, but it was the end of the road for his 14-year-old clubmate, Kyle Mainwaring, who lost to Thomastown's Wynford Griffiths 21-16.

Ebbw Vale's Jonathan Tomlinson, who found conditions to his liking in a comfortable 21-9 win over Harlequins' Derek Giles, setting up a clash with fellow international Craig Maycock.

West End's Nicky Minett always saves his form for the tournament and this year has proved no exception as he disposed of Skewen international, Geoff Mellor, but Mellor's brother Ian fared better against host club opposition, defeating Albert Moule 21-18.
