The Eugene Area Chamber of Commerce has named Roger Saydack as the 2006 First Citizen.

Saydack, an attorney, recently was named vice president for legal affairs and business transactions at PeaceHealth Oregon Region.

In announcing the award, chamber officials said Saydack is recognized as a community leader in health care and the arts.

He served on PeaceHealth's regional and system governing boards from 1996 until he went to work for PeaceHealth this year.

The 59-year-old also has volunteered at a number of local and national arts and educational organizations, including the University of Oregon's Museum of Art, the City of Eugene's Hult Center and Visual Arts visual arts nplartes fpl plásticas

Saydack's interest in the arts dates back to his childhood, he said.

"I grew up in Detroit, and that was a very active city in the arts," he said. "I got really interested. As a kid I began studying music."

Later, he said, he studied film-making and painting in college.

After he moved to Eugene in 1976, Saydack said he found it was the kind of community that offers a lot of opportunities for volunteering.

"When I began to practice law, I recognized that I had a real debt to society, that we all have, to pay back some of the benefits we've received."

Saydack also is regarded as one of Oregon's leading business lawyers, according to Dave Hauser, president of the chamber. Saydack has been listed in Best Lawyers in America since 1993 and was listed in Oregon Super Lawyers in 2006.

He graduated from the University of Oregon School of Law The University of Oregon School of Law, housed in the Knight Law Center, is Oregon's state funded law school. He went on to become a founding partner of Arnold Gallagher Saydack Percell Roberts & Potter. He has served as an adjunct professor at the UO School of Law since 1989.
