Laura Coleman looked on as some of the region's most glamorous girls lined up in military fatigues to show their support for the brave men and women who regularly risk their lives. The 25 girls are all competing for the crown of Miss Coventry, after winning through a series of heats to the final at Brandon Hall Hotel on March 28. The one who scoops that title will then go forward to the Miss England final in London in July, and possibly Miss World in South Africa South Africa, Afrikaans Suid-Afrika, officially Republic of South Africa, republic (2005 est. pop. 44,344,000), 471,442 sq mi (1,221,037 sq km), S Africa. in November. All hopefuls are aged 17 to 24, and live within 25 miles of Coventry. As part of the pageant, contestants are encouraged to generate cash for the Help The Heroes fund, a charity set up in 2007 to help British servicemen and women hurt in action. The competition is organised by Diane Slater, whose daughter Jayne combines teaching with a successful modelling career, and whose soldier son Stephen has seen action in Afghanistan and Iraq. She said: "It's a cause which is very close to my heart as my son Stephen is a serving soldier. He has been all over the world doing his job. "Though he's been mentioned in dispatches for bravery under fire, he was hurt during training on Salisbury Plain Salisbury Plain, undulating, mostly barren chalk plateau, c.300 sq mi (780 sq km), Wiltshire, S England.
