Attacking the tax gap.
At a recent FTB symposium on California's tax gap, state
controller Steve Westly and other FTB members outlined specific
initiatives to reduce the gap, including:
* Enhanced detection of tax preparers filing fraudulent tax
returns;
* Audit staff augmentation;
* Added information sources to identify nonfilers;
* Informant reward program; and
* Underground economy criminal investigations.
