The attack happened in July 2 004 but the case had been delayed because Ford had twice been given bail and twice absconded. Prosecutor Kristina Montgomery said that Lucy had been out in Leamington Spa and was walking home with three friends at about 1.30am when they passed Ford. He was with two women and, possibly trying to show off to them, said something to the group. Words were exchanged before Lucy and her friends carried on walking. But Ford continued to speak to them from behind, so Lucy turned and asked him what he was doing, and why he was being so foolish. That led to blows between Ford and one of her group, and Ford, who got the worse of the exchange, then walked to a nearby house where he was staying at the time. Shortly afterwards Lucy and her friends had almost got home when Ford re-appeared and approached them brandishing a Samurai sword. He raised it above his head and went towards them. There was a struggle during which Lucy tried to grab the handle of the sword as Ford brought the blade down, and the blade caused a wound to her hand. John Edwards, defending, handed the Judge a letter from Ford, and pointed out that he had been in custody since September, which was the equivalent of an eight-month sentence. Ford was given community rehabilitation for 12 months. |
