New perspectives on maritime history and nautical archaeology

D774

This historical account of the USS Charles Carroll, a World War II cargo vessel that was transformed into an attack transport ship, is written largely from the point of view of one of its commissioned officers, Lt. Robert Goldman, who is also the author's father. Using his father's diaries and letters home as well additional interviews from fellow crewmen and archival materials, the author explains how these men had to quickly adapt to wartime conditions, ultimately transporting more troops to the battle fronts (including Normandy) than trains and planes combined. Plenty of original ship documents, artifacts and photographs are included as well.
