John Smeaton
 struggled yesterday at his first public appearance as the latest candidate for the Glasgow North-East by-election.

Smeato was quizzed on his policies and those supporting his bid for Michael Martin's seat.

He is backed by the Jury Team, founded and funded by Sir Paul Judge who has close ties to the Tory party.

On proposal for elected select committees in the House of Commons House of Commons: see Parliament. , he said: "It's something that I've not looked into but I'll look into it and I'll get back to you on that."

Asked about immigration immigration, entrance of a person (an alien) into a new country for the purpose of establishing permanent residence. Motives for immigration, like those for migration generally, are often economic, although religious or political factors may be very important. , he said "it needs to be looked at" adding that immigrants have done a "fantastic job in this country" but the system "needs to be fairer".

Pressed on what was unfair about it, he said: "I just think it needs to be fairer across the board."
