Attachmate to Deliver 3270 Tools for Computer Associates' COBOL Client/Server Environments as a Member of CA's Development Partnership Program; Attachmate's QuickApp offers integration with CA-Visual Realia to deliver a total solution for COBOL-to-Client/Server migration.

BELLEVUE, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 1, 1996--Attachmate - The Intranet Company(tm) - today announced a partnership with Computer Associates International Inc. (CA) to provide support for CA-Visual Realia(tm) in QuickApp(r), Attachmate(r) Corp.'s revolutionary graphical client-to-host development tool.

CA-Visual Realia is a fully integrated client/server tool that allows COBOL COBOL: see programming language.

programmers to easily create mission-critical graphical applications. Attachmate's QuickApp extends this capability by easily incorporating host screen-based information into these new client/server applications while eliminating the need to write communications code.

QuickApp support for CA-Visual Realia will be available for Windows 3.1 (using CA-Visual Realia version 1.0) and for Windows 95 with full OCX (OLE Control EXtension) A component software technology from Microsoft that enables a Windows program to add functionality by calling ready-made components. Generally called "OLE controls" or "OLE custom controls," they appear to the end user as just another part of  support (using CA-Visual Realia version 2.0). Under the partnership, Attachmate has become a member of CA's Development Partnership Program, which has been recently expanded to include CA-Visual Realia. Attachmate is the first member under the CA-Visual Realia umbrella.

"Many COBOL developers have been asking for 3270 connectivity support as part of the client/server migration process in CA-Visual Realia," said Marc Sokol vice president of advanced technologies at Computer Associates. "This alliance allows COBOL developers to extend the scope of CA-Visual Realia with the unique and strongly integrated capabilities of QuickApp."

QuickApp arms developers with a powerful navigation engine which supports IBM mainframes Following are the mainframe architectures used in IBM mainframes since the original System/360 introduced in 1964.

VAX models ranged from desktop units to mainframes all running the same VMS operating system, and VAXes could emulate PDP models , Unix and Unisys systems. This engine eliminates the need to write communication code, ultimately slashing development time by as much as 50 percent. The Attachmate navigation engine insulates application developers from the communications and HLLAPI (High Level Language Application Program Interface) An IBM programming interface that allows a PC application to communicate with a mainframe application. The hardware hookup is handled via normal micro to mainframe 3270 emulation.  complexities involved in host-to-client/server development. By eliminating the need to understand communications programming, QuickApp enables developers to deploy new client/server and desktop applications using graphical tools such as CA-Visual Realia in a fraction of the time.

CA-Visual Realia uses a Windows-based visual programming environment to provide veteran COBOL programmers with new, highly productive tools for creating and updating new applications, yet retains the full functionality of COBOL. CA-Visual Realia includes everything users need to build Windows applications A program that is written to run under Microsoft's Windows operating system. Such applications typically run under all 32-bit versions of Windows, but earlier applications might also run under the 16-bit versions (Windows 3.x) as well. "Attachmate and Computer Associates share much of the same client base," said Bobby Clay, Attachmate's vice president of Enterprise Client/Server Tools. "Since 80 percent of corporate America's development sites are COBOL-based, QuickApp's support for CA-Visual Realia fills an important gap in the market. Our ability to provide connectivity at the desktop to CA's strong suite of applications make this partnership a perfect fit."

Computer Associates recommends Attachmate's QuickApp to meet the 3270 development needs of CA-Visual Realia users. Computer Associates will include an introductory version of QuickApp with all copies of CA-Visual Realia, enabling CA-Visual Realia users to sample the capabilities of QuickApp. For existing CA-Visual Realia customers, this version of QuickApp will be available free of charge directly from Attachmate's Internet Web page (http://www.attachmate.com).
