Attachmate announces Visual Basic 4.0 and Visual C++ 4.0 support with powerful 32-bit communications tools; Attachmate's Enterprise Client/Server Series -- QuickApp, QuickPeer and QuickDB to provide three-tier client/server solutions for developers.

BELLEVUE, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 12, 1995--Attachmate(R) Corp. today announced plans to ship new versions of QuickApp(R), QuickPeer(TM) and QuickDB(TM).

These additions to Attachmate's Enterprise Client/Server Series product family are designed to take full advantage of the 32-bit architecture featured in Microsoft(R) Visual Basic(R) 4.0 and Microsoft Visual C++(TM) 4.0.

"The reliability of Attachmate's PC-based host communications products has always been strong," said Scott Crow, a senior programmer analyst A person who analyzes and designs information systems and designs and writes the application programs for the system. In theory, a programmer analyst is both systems analyst and applications programmer. In practice, the title is sometimes simply a reward to a programmer for tenure.  with The Limited Credit Services. "We are looking forward to the 32-bit products which will allow us to use more robust 32-bit clients and take full advantage of 32-bit communications. This will definitely be another great step forward in client/server development."

Attachmate's Enterprise Client/Server Series provides the most comprehensive set of solutions for integrating host-based information into new graphical client/server applications. Depending upon the extent which organizations choose to preserve host legacy applications, client/server development in a host environment can be achieved in three ways. These three ways are determined by the component of the host application - presentation (screens), data (databases), or business logic (programs) - with which the client component interfaces.

In all cases, the Enterprise Client/Server Series products extend the capabilities of popular client/server development tools with powerful communications middleware. This completely insulates application developers from communications complexities and enables them to build enterprise client/server applications.

"Attachmate is the only communications vendor to offer this breadth of 16 and 32-bit development tools for enterprise applications," said Bobby Clay, director of product marketing at Attachmate. "These tools shield developers from writing elaborate communications code by using technically advanced object-oriented capabilities."

Presentations (Screens) - QuickApp

QuickApp is the most advanced solution for integrating screen-based host data into new client/server applications built with leading client/server tools such as Microsoft's Visual Basic and Visual C++, Powersoft's PowerBuilder and GUPTA's SQL Windows See SQLWindows. . QuickApp's navigation technology empowers the developer to incorporate data from multiple host-resident screens -- without writing communications code!

QuickApp brings together the best of both worlds: host and client/server. Now, corporate America can leverage their investment in screen-based host applications and take advantage of host security and transaction volume capacity. QuickApp supports IBM mainframe IBM mainframes, though perceived as synonymous with mainframe computers in general due to their marketshare, are now technically and specifically IBM's line of business computers that can all trace their design evolution to the IBM System/360. , AS/400, VAX (Virtual Address eXtension) A venerable family of 32-bit computers from HP (via Digital and Compaq) introduced in 1977 with the VAX-11/780. Data (Databases) - QuickDB

QuickDB is powerful host database middleware that seamlessly integrates information from host databases into new client/server applications. Through ODBC (Open DataBase Connectivity) A database programming interface from Microsoft that provides a common language for Windows applications to access databases on a network.  access to host database environments, QuickDB extends the capabilities of popular query, reporting, and client/server tools, as well as desktop applications. In conjunction with client/server development tools, it gives developers the ability to build and execute database queries against host databases.

QuickDB empowers users to retrieve and integrate host database information outside the scope of the host application. In the IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  environment, QuickDB can access data on DB2, DB2/400 and SQL/DS (SQL/Data System) A full-featured relational DBMS from IBM for VSE and VM environments that has integrated query and report writing facilities.

In the Unisys environment, QuickDB splits the processing between the client and the server, placing the application logic and SQL SQL

Business Logic (Programs) - QuickPeer

QuickPeer offers a reliable communications middleware solution for integrating host business logic into new client/server applications. QuickPeer leverages investment in tried and true mainframe COBOL COBOL: see programming language.

In 1970, RPG II added enhancements that made it a mainstay programming language for business applications on IBM's System/3x midrange computers. , and VAX C applications.

QuickPeer allows developers to utilize leading edge client/server tools for new functionality, while employing QuickPeer to incorporate indispensable host business logic into client/server applications.

QuickPeer generates the client communications code in the native script languages of popular client/server development tools. QuickPeer includes COBOL, RPG, and C communications code samples which can be modified and plugged into host programs.
