Attachmate Surprises Industry -- New AS/400 System-Based Pricing Changes Paradigm.

SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 4, 1995--Attachmate Corp., the leading provider of enterprise host connectivity solutions, has taken the confusion out of purchasing AS/400 host connectivity software.

Now, for one price, customers get unlimited access to their AS/400 system. Windows connectivity has never been easier.

MIS professionals no longer have to count the number of users connected to a specific AS/400. For any AS/400 model, an unlimited number of users can now connect for only $4,500! Customers pay one time, and additional users are added at no additional cost. For those customers who require only a few users to be attached to the AS/400, RALLY! for AS/400 will still be offered on a per user basis. The new low per user price is $165 compared to the previous price of $395.

"Attachmate's aggressive pricing strategy for AS/400 connectivity brings a revolutionary pricing concept to the enterprise," said Carl Peede, vice president for Attachmate's IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  Personality Products. "We're providing a one-time flat fee license for an unlimited number of users connecting to any size AS/400 platform, and as added value Added value in financial analysis of shares is to be distinguished from value added. Used as a measure of shareholder value, calculated using the formula:

Added Value = Sales - Purchases - Labour Costs - Capital Costs
to our customers, it's backed by Attachmate's industry-leading software support program."

Connectivity enhancements

RALLY! users can now connect to the Banyan banyan (băn`yən), species of fig (Ficus bengalensis) of the family Moraceae (mulberry family), native to India, where it is venerated. "Banyan is very excited about our strong relationship and strategic partnership with Attachmate," said Steve Petrofsky, Director of Platforms Product Marketing for Banyan. "RALLY! for the AS/400 brings our Banyan SNA (Systems Network Architecture) IBM's mainframe network standards introduced in 1974. Originally a centralized architecture with a host computer controlling many terminals, enhancements, such as APPN and APPC (LU 6.  Communications Service customers the simplest, easiest, and most efficient access to their AS/400 data. They also gain the ability to more easily develop client/server applications." In addition to Banyan support, RALLY! also now supports the Attachmate Select Comm Server.

RALLY! users now also have the capability to concurrently connect to multiple sessions over both SNA and TCP/IP TCP/IP

from one desktop. With the influx of TCP/IP into traditional SNA environments, the ability to connect to an AS/400 over both these protocols is increasingly important.

Interface Enhancements

The new version of RALLY! now contains a configurable toolbar A row or column of on-screen buttons used to activate functions in the application. Many toolbars are customizable, letting you add and delete buttons as required. Toolbars may be fixed in position or may float, which means they can be dragged to a more convenient location in the . Users can customize the toolbar to include the functions that are most frequently utilized. Additionally, customers can add user-defined buttons to the toolbar, allowing them to assign a Windows program to one of the icons. This allows the user to launch the Windows program from within RALLY!

The security features have also been enhanced. Administrators now have the capability to control session configurations with a password which ensures users cannot change the settings. Administrators can remove file transfer, session configuration, and keyboard remapping. Additionally, they can hide the toolbar or remove editing privilege and session menus can be limited or hidden completely.

Client/Server

RALLY! now includes sample client/server programs using ODBC, WinHLLAPI, and APPC (Advanced Program-to-Program Communications) A high-level protocol from IBM that allows one program to interact with another across the network. It supports client/server and distributed computing by providing a common programming interface on all IBM platforms. . These programs allow developers to easily address specific user requests for client/server application development. In addition to the sample programs, thorough documentation is provided. These tools allow developers to add specialized GUI (Graphical User Interface) A graphics-based user interface that incorporates movable windows, icons and a mouse. The ability to resize application windows and change style and size of fonts are the significant advantages of a GUI vs. a character-based interface.  front-ends to standard AS/400 menus.

RALLY! is compatible with all the Attachmate Tools which includes QuickApp and QuickPeer. These tools allow developers to quickly and easily generate client/server applications.

"The Attachmate pricing structure is particularly important to enterprises that are downsizing (1) Converting mainframe and mini-based systems to client/server LANs.

(2) To reduce equipment and associated costs by switching to a less-expensive system.
