BELLEVUE, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 20, 1995--Attachmate Corp. and Westinghouse Communications today announced a systems integration agreement to jointly market Attachmate's Remote LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. Providing a granular service of up to DS3 speed (45 Mbps), it has become popular for LAN to LAN connections across remote distances, and services are offered by most major carriers.  Network.

The combined solution provides remote LAN access technology with network service and support.

The joint offering will enable users to access their corporate LAN from any remote location via a toll-free 800 number. Users are relieved from having to be concerned about modem pools A collection of modems and software that let users dial out and remote users dial in on the next available modem. The service currently supports V.34 standard modem access at speeds up to 28.8 Kbps with an ISDN ISDN

"We are excited about the benefits this arrangement can bring to the mobile user or the home user," says Leon Edelsack, Westinghouse vice president of Data Network Services. "A simple, yet secure means to exchange information with the home office fits nicely with what our customers are telling us they need. They're especially attracted to being able to buy a completely managed service, which relieves their overworked staff from dealing with the technology headaches."

Westinghouse provides and manages a complete LAN dial remote access service over a single frame relay connection to the customer premise. This service is an especially attractive add-on for customers who already use frame relay to interconnect (1) To attach one device to another.

Earlier this year, Mikasa, one of the world's largest distributors of fine ceramic dinnerware, crystal, flatware and giftware, replaced its private line network with Westinghouse's Frame Relay and LAN Dial Remote Access service.  and group managers easy access to our AS/400s and our Novell servers," says Don Sanginaro, Mikasa sr. vice president. "Buying a managed service enabled us to accelerate our remote access plans by as much as a year," estimates Sanginaro.

"We had been using an outdated dial package for the AS/400 which is no longer supported by the vendor," added Henry Bernal, Mikasa vice president Information Systems. "At first I thought the Westinghouse service might be cumbersome because of all the options and features, but it proved to be very easy for us to use. Next, we want to make the service available to our programmers who work from home," said Bernal.

"Fortune 1000 companies are turning to single source managed service providers to implement complete end-to-end communications solutions," said Steve Byrd, Attachmate Director of Business Development. "Attachmate has long recognized the strategic advantages that remote computing computing - computer  brings to corporate users."

users and remote offices to cost effectively and efficiently access information on the network. Remote LAN Node (RLN) provides access to any application or service on any host or any LAN with any client from anywhere. The power of RLN resides in its server software which provides protocol transparency and uses advanced bridging and routing technology to move LAN packets to remote users. This means remote users can run applications, access the host, send or receive e-mail messages, and perform other tasks as if locally connected to the LAN.

"This joint marketing agreement provides Westinghouse with the unique ability to custom design and manage a complete communications network The transmission channels interconnecting all client and server stations as well as all supporting hardware and software.  for their customers while providing secure and reliable remote access connectivity," said Steve Greenstein, Attachmate Manager of Business Development. "Remote access solutions are increasingly being leveraged to increase productivity of traveling employees and telecommuters while protecting the value of existing investments in LAN-based software, peripherals and information throughout the corporate enterprise."
