Attachmate First to Ship Remote LAN Access with Integrated ISDN; The Tolly Group certifies RLN (Remote LAN Node) "Up-to-Spec".

CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 31, 1995--Attachmate Corp. today announced it has begun shipping Remote LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  Node (RLN RLN Relaxin

 solution for remote access.

RLN 4.0 now provides faster, more cost effective remote access to data and applications on the network.

RLN over ISDN minimizes phone charges while satisfying user requirements with high performance access. Using ISDN cards, remote users can dial and connect to an RLN Server in a fraction of the time required with a modem. The connection is virtually instantaneous and takes full advantage of ISDN by offering remote client-to-server connections at 64 Kbps. RLN 4.0 is the first to support fully integrated, simple access to the LAN over ISDN, asynchronous Refers to events that are not synchronized, or coordinated, in time. The following are considered asynchronous operations. The interval between transmitting A and B is not the same as between B and C. With the choices of both Basic Rate and Primary Rate services, users can maximize flexibility and minimize cost by scaling the service to match demand.

Up to 90% of the cost for telecommunication links between remote client and the network can now be saved using RLN's new "Demand Dial Activity". The RLN software dynamically suspends the remote connection when the network connection is not needed.

In a matter of seconds, the ISDN connection is restored as the user needs to access data or applications. In a NetWare environment, the RLN 4.0 server maintains the logical connection to the network while the remote client connection is suspended. The remote connection is automatically reestablished when needed, and the remote user is reauthenticated using RLN security.

Additional features include ISDN Caller ID A telephone company service that sends the caller's telephone number between the first and second ring of the call. If the calling number is not blocked, the calling number is displayed on the handset or base station of the called party. , dial-out modem pooling and an enhanced DOS and Windows client interface.

-- ISDN Caller ID, available from the ISDN carriers, can be used to automatically authenticate a user through RLN security. This option can streamline security maintenance and systems access eliminating the need for dialback security.

-- RLN dial-out allows a RLN Server to act as a modem pool server for LAN-attached DOS and Windows workstations. Users on the LAN can initiate modem connections for access to external services such as the Internet and CompuServe. The value of the customer's modem investments is maximized by servicing both dial-in and dial-out requests.

-- The enhanced DOS and Windows remote client interface provides easy to use directories for quickly changing dial prefixes, phone numbers and server site locations.

, the enhanced user interface now provides directories for quickly configuring a connection, this provides an easier access method for Sprint's highly mobile sales force," said Rick Stargel, program manager, for Sprint's field sales automation Sales Automation - Sales Force Automation . "Future plans for ISDN implementation will be critical to supporting Sprints telecommuting efforts."

The RLN ISDN solution can be implemented by purchasing the software and ISDN cards separately, or the implementation can be greatly streamlined with an RLN ISDN Kit that includes all the necessary software and hardware components for a complete ISDN solution. The kits are available in a variety of client and server configurations supporting both Basic Rate and Primary Rate access.

Certified Up to Spec

Coincident to the availability of RLN 4.0 the RLN product suite has been awarded The Tolly Group's "Up-to-Spec" certification as the result of their most recent remote access performance testing.

According to Kevin Tolly, president of The Tolly Group, other performance tests have relied on raw file transfer rates as the principle benchmark for remote access performance. "Here, we focused on typical application functions performed by the user. The test environment included common applications such as the Microsoft Office Suite, Host application access, SQL SQL

database access, and E-mail," he said. According to The Tolly Group report, "... the RLN Server and Application Server combination consistently and dramatically out performs the other remote LAN access devices across a wide variety of applications and tasks."

Attachmate's RLN Application Server enhances the performance of data-intensive applications for remote DOS, Windows and OS/2 users. When combined, Remote LAN Node and the RLN Application Server deliver seamless integrated remote node and multi-user application server technologies, resulting in optimized remote performance for client/server, host- and LAN-based applications.

"RLN and the RLN Application Server provide a unique integrated remote access solution," said Ian Pennell, vice president of Attachmate's remote access products group. "And this integrated solution is also easy on the end user. The remote user need not choose between multiple access methods, they simply click on application icons, just like in the office."

The RLN suite is the vital "anywhere" component of Attachmate's total enterprise connectivity solutions providing access to any application, on any host or any LAN, from "anywhere."
