The Microsoft Mail Driver to IBM PROFS and OfficeVision, to be renamed and marketed by Attachmate as the ZIP! Office Client Connection for MS Mail to PROFS, allows IBM PROFS or OfficeVision/VM users access their files via the same Windows-based client as users of Microsoft Mail, rather than a 3270 terminal emulation session. PROFS or OfficeVision users can thus take advantage of Microsoft Mail's graphical interface with its richer feature set and excellent integration with other desktop applications.

The Microsoft Mail Gateway to IBM PROFS and OfficeVision, to be renamed and marketed by Attachmate as the ZIP! Office Gateway for MS Mail to PROFS, is a DOS-based gateway that allows Microsoft Mail and Schedule+ users the ability to exchange information and schedule meetings with PROFS and OfficeVision/VM users. The Gateway includes four separate components: Gateway, LAN Access, Host Access and Distribution Manager. With the optional Distribution Manager, the Gateway provides the capability of using the host infrastructure as a messaging backbone.

Integrated Messaging and Scheduling Capabilities for Microsoft Exchange

Originally announced June 1994 at Microsoft's Information Exchange Conference, the ZIP! Office Gateway for MS Exchange to PROFS will provide full integration between Microsoft Exchange and PROFS or OfficeVision/VM. The Gateway, developed using the advanced real-time scheduling technology found in Attachmate's ZIP! Office Server, will allow Microsoft Exchange users connected to Microsoft Exchange Server to transparently exchange information, schedule meetings in real-time with PROFS and OfficeVision/VM users. The Gateway will be developed by Attachmate, to comply with an Attachmate and Microsoft jointly designed specification, and will be marketed and sold exclusively by Attachmate.

The SNADS gateway for Microsoft Exchange, called the ZIP! Office Gateway for MS Exchange to SNADS, will allow Microsoft Exchange users connected to Microsoft Exchange Server to transparently exchange information with systems supporting SNADS including OfficeVision/MVS via DISOSS (DIStributed Office Support System) An IBM mainframe centralized document distribution and filing application that runs under MVS. Its counterpart under VM is PROFS.  or OfficePath, OfficeVision/400, IBM Mail Exchange and Verimation Memo. The Gateway, based on technology licensed from IMI Computing and co-designed by Microsoft, will be sold by Attachmate on a world-wide basis.

The target market for all of these ZIP! Office products are organizations currently using PROFS or OfficeVision but with a desire to migrate to the more cost effective, intuitive, flexible and feature rich functionality of Microsoft Mail and/or Schedule+ on the LAN or desktop.

"This agreement provides our customers with the messaging and connectivity expertise from two leaders in their respective fields -- Microsoft, a leader in messaging and Attachmate, a leader in connectivity," commented Gregory Sokoloff, vice president, Product Management, Host Servers at Attachmate. "Connectivity between Microsoft and IBM Many people are too new to the computer industry to remember that IBM once occupied the lofty position that Microsoft currently enjoys. Today, it's a Microsoft versus The Rest of the World computer industry. Yesterday, it was IBM versus everybody else.  platforms will be extremely beneficial to our many large corporate customers who wish to integrate their Microsoft Mail and Schedule+ users with their PROFS or OfficeVision users."
