Attachmate's QuickDB Development Tool Provides Universal Database Access; New version has 100% Java certified, JDBC thin client support.

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 24, 1998--Attachmate today introduced QuickDB(tm) 2.3, a client and server solution allowing users to access database information over a LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used. , WAN, or the Internet.

It allows developers to incorporate information from host and LAN-based databases into client/server or web-enabled applications, reducing development cycles by leveraging reusable code. The product now features JDBC (Java DataBase Connectivity) A programming interface that lets Java applications access a database via the SQL language. Since Java interpreters (Java Virtual Machines) are available for all major client platforms, this allows a platform-independent database (tm) support, broadening QuickDB's appeal to Java(tm) developers, and DRDA (Distributed Relational Database Architecture) An IBM architecture for distributing data across multiple heterogeneous platforms. It also serves as a protocol for access to these databases from IBM and non-IBM platforms. DRDA uses LU 6.2 as its transport protocol. (R) over IP, facilitating DB2(R) access.

Thick and thin clients supported. QuickDB Universal offers thick and thin client solutions, a wide choice of connectivity options, easy deployment, and simplified desktop management, making it a versatile, budget-wise solution for bringing database information to the desktop. The JDBC Thin Client is 100% pure Java Refers to initiatives from Sun that specify 100% compliance with its Java specification. The goal is to maintain a consistent, single interface for Java so that all Java Virtual Machines can run all Java programs. See Holy Grail. , providing platform-independent client access to corporate data through browser-based applets and Java applications.

Never touch the desktop again. QuickDB Universal's thin client can be pre-configured at the server to be simply and easily deployed across the enterprise. The ODBC/JDBC drivers now reside on the QuickDB Server instead of having multiple drivers on the client. By centralizing installation, distribution, and maintenance functions, Attachmate is helping IT in its ongoing challenge to reduce costs by eliminating the need to visit individual desktops.

Supported databases and enhanced DRDA. QuickDB supports host databases such as DB2, DB2/400(tm) and SQL/DS (SQL/Data System) A full-featured relational DBMS from IBM for VSE and VM environments that has integrated query and report writing facilities.

SQL/DS - A database package from IBM including a relational DBMS.

IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries) (R); Oracle(R) and Sybase(R) LAN databases; and any OBDC OBDC - Do you mean ODBC?  or JBDC legacy or relational database relational database

on any platform. QuickDB Universal now includes support for DRDA over IP. Previously, for DB2 access a complex LU 6.2 connection was mandatory. With support for TCP/IP TCP/IP

, the DB2 driver can translate ODBC (Open DataBase Connectivity) A database programming interface from Microsoft that provides a common language for Windows applications to access databases on a network.  calls into DRDA and communicate with DB2 over a TCP/IP link.

Support for standard tools. Attachmate is committed to facilitating access to enterprise data, so QuickDB supports industry-standard development tools such as Visual Basic(R) and PowerBuilder(R), allowing developers to build applications that execute database queries with simple point-and-click operations without having to spend development time writing host communications code. For end-users standardized on Microsoft(R) Office, QuickDB's integration with Microsoft APIs permits incorporation of data from multiple sources into PC applications such as Excel and Word.

Pricing and Availability. QuickDB Universal 2.3 client has a suggested retail price of $295 (U.S.), and the QuickDB 2.3 Server has a suggested retail price of $3995. Both will be available in late April from Attachmate resellers, retailers, and VARs, as well as through the Attachmate sales organization.
