Milestone Reflects Increasing Industry-wide Support for Atrica's

Revolutionary, Carrier-Class Optical Ethernet Systems

Reflecting increasing industry-wide support for its revolutionary Optical Ethernet Systems, Atrica(TM) today announced that it will surpass an impressive milestone -- shipping over 50,000 ports in Q2 2003. The first solutions purpose-built to meet the requirements of service providers who are building the next generation of Metro networks Metro Networks is a broadcasting outsourcing company based in Houston, Texas. It is a subsidiary of Westwood One, which is managed by CBS Radio. The company operates a number of local and regional news and traffic facilities that provide regular reports to affiliates, together with , Atrica's Optical Ethernet Systems allow service providers to dramatically simplify their Metro network operations, significantly reduce their capital and operational expenditures, and scale their networks effectively to support emerging Ethernet-based services.

Officially introduced to the marketplace in 2001, Atrica's Optical Ethernet Systems are enjoying increasing popularity with service providers worldwide. The company is currently engaged with more than 12 major carriers in varying phases of evaluation, testing, and deployment. Al-Pi Telecomunicacions, for example, a leading regional telecommunications service provider A Telecommunications Service Provider or TSP is a type of Communications Service Provider that has traditionally provided telephone and similar services. This category includes ILECs, CLECs, and mobile wireless companies.  based in Barcelona, Spain, has deployed Atrica's Optical Ethernet Systems as the foundation for its next-generation Metropolitan Area Network.

Using Atrica's Carrier-class Optical Ethernet Systems, Al-Pi's Metro network infrastructure is delivering a new set of profitable data services to its customer base. The new Optical Ethernet-based services include a point-to-point Ethernet virtual private line service that provides significantly improved performance over Al-Pi's traditional leased line A private communications channel leased from a common carrier. "We selected Atrica's Optical Ethernet Systems because they offer the scalability, flexible bandwidth, and Carrier-class attributes necessary for delivering profitable new Ethernet-based services," said Aime Brial, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Al-Pi Telecomunicacions. "We have been pleased with the results we are seeing so far, including a substantial reduction in both our capital and operational expenditures and a quicker time-to-market for new service offerings. We expect to enjoy even further benefits as we continue our deployment efforts."

"We are delighted that forward-thinking service providers such as Al-Pi are enjoying the technical, business, and service benefits that our innovative Optical Ethernet Systems provide," said Vivek Ragavan, Atrica's president and CEO. "Reaching this important milestone in the number of ports shipped is clear evidence of Atrica's position as an industry leader. It validates our vision of cost-effective, Carrier-class Optical Ethernet and reflects increasing market acceptance of our revolutionary technology."

Atrica's Optical Ethernet Systems

A complete solution for Metro carriers, Atrica's suite of Carrier-class Optical Ethernet Systems is comprised of the A-2000 family of Optical Ethernet Edge Switches, the A-4000 family of Optical Ethernet Aggregation Switches, the A-8000 Series of Optical Ethernet Core Switches, and the Atrica Service Platform for Ethernet Networks (ASPEN(TM)), an integrated service provisioning and management system. Unlike modified SONET/SDH platforms that attempt to retrofit technology designed primarily for voice traffic, or current Ethernet solutions that are based on enterprise-class equipment, Atrica's Carrier-class Optical Ethernet Systems were developed specifically for the service provider environment.

Atrica's Optical Ethernet Systems -- including 10 Gigabit Ethernet An Ethernet standard that transmits at 1 Gbps. Used mostly to connect high-end workstations and servers as well as for network backbones, Gigabit Ethernet transmits full duplex from point to point using switches and half duplex in a shared environment (CSMA/CD) using a hub.  and integrated WDM (1) (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) A technology that uses multiple lasers and transmits several wavelengths of light (lambdas) simultaneously over a single optical fiber.  technology - supply significantly better price/performance than SONET/SDH-based equipment. In addition, Atrica's Optical Ethernet Systems deliver Carrier-class attributes including guaranteed service level agreements (SLAs), sub-50 millisecond resiliency, integration with circuit switched networks, Ethernet Circuit Emulation Services (CES) for support of TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) A technology that transmits multiple signals simultaneously over a single transmission path. Each lower-speed signal is time sliced into one high-speed transmission.  traffic, and point and click OAM&P that meets and exceeds what carriers have been accustomed to in legacy networks.
