"Cox is among the most savvy and creative carriers in the industry, and we're delighted to work with them to provide solutions that deliver a highly differentiated service mix, very cost-effectively, for COIN applications," said Rob Newman, chief executive officer and president of Atmosphere Networks.

Defense Consortium Solution Represents the State of the Art

The Defense Consortium contract comprises two separate telecommunications applications. The first will provide 20 Mbps of transparent LAN service A service from a carrier that links remote Ethernets together. It is called "transparent" because the connected Ethernets are viewed as one Ethernet by the customer, regardless of the technology employed by the carrier in between.  over Cox's bi-directional and redundant OC-48 SONET backbone, rate shaped via ATM over an OC-3 interface to 45 Mbps per circuit. The second application includes more than 180 voice circuits, with Ethernet, ATM and voice all delivered over the same network platform. The Atmosphere equipment is unique in its ability to provide electrical handoffs for Ethernet applications over the LAN as well as optical handoffs for high-speed applications. As a result, Cox can quickly and easily respond to the Defense Consortium's requests for new or differently mixed telecommunications services.

The new data connection between the Software Engineering Center and SPAWAR will enable workers at both locations to more quickly and easily share e-mail, financial data, administrative information, complex drawings and other non-classified communications. In addition, Cox will be able to scale the network's performance on short notice -- overnight, compared to the 60 to 90 days required by carriers using traditional telecommunications equipment.

Formed in 1999, the San Diego Defense & Space Technology Consortium was created to help businesses in San Diego County defense and space industry cluster to compete for and win defense contracts, such as the contract for the Cox/Atmosphere optical networking solution.
