Gruber has been named to the new position of vice president, strategic planning Strategic planning is an organization's process of defining its strategy, or direction, and making decisions on allocating its resources to pursue this strategy, including its capital and people. , effective today. He will report to J. Patrick Reddy, Atmos Energy's senior vice president and chief financial officer.

Gruber, 43, had been president of Atmos Energy's Louisiana Division, the company's largest utility unit based in Baton Rouge, since June 2001. The company said Gruber's replacement in Louisiana will be named soon.

In his new position, Gruber will be responsible for working with Atmos Energy's six utility divisions to develop rate strategies and to improve the quality of revenue recovery. He also will work with the company's nonutility operations on growth initiatives involving capital projects and new products and services.

"It is vital to the continued success of Atmos Energy that we focus on our overall rate strategy as well as identify other new strategies to drive financial performance," said Robert W. Best, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Atmos Energy Corporation. "I'm confident that Conrad will provide outstanding leadership in these areas."

Before moving to Louisiana, Gruber served as president of Atmos Energy's Kentucky Division from 1999 to 2001. He began his career with Atmos Energy in February 1991 as engineering and measurement coordinator in the Dallas headquarters. From 1994 to 1999, he served as vice president, technical services, of Atmos Energy's Colorado-Kansas Division.
