) and Protel International Limited announced today they have entered into a strategic partnership to make Protel's full featured Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools accessible to Atmel's Programmable Logic Device See PLD.  customers. Under an agreement signed last week, Atmel will begin distributing ProChip Designer(TM), a full featured EDA suite incorporating design tools provided by Protel that together with Atmel's proprietary user interface/design navigator and device specific fitter software will support all Atmel's Simple and Complex Programmable Logic Device (hardware) complex programmable logic device - (CPLD) A programmable circuit similar to an FPGA, but generally on a smaller scale, invented by Xilinx, Inc.  (SPLD (Simple PLD) A programmable logic device that provides a small logic block that can be programmed. The logic block typically contains a handful of macrocells, which have multiple inputs and the ability to perform a limited amount of logic.  and CPLD (Complex PLD) A programmable logic device that is made up of several simple PLDs (SPLDs) with a programmable switching matrix in between the logic blocks. CPLDs typically use EEPROM, flash memory or SRAM to hold the logic design interconnections. See PLD and SPLD. ) products.

"We are very excited about this new partnership with Protel," said Jim Fahey, Atmel's EPLD Product Marketing Director. "The broad range of Protel products, combined with their key acquisitions in synthesis and simulation technology, serve perfectly as the core for the Atmel second-generation EDA for our PLDs. The new Protel-based Atmel ProChip Designer suite, complemented by second generation fitter technology, allows the Atmel enhanced CPLD architecture to provide designers with unprecedented CPLD utilization and flexibility with all members of the first generation and emerging second generation ATF ATF Molecular virology Activating transcription factor A cellular protein that stimulates transcription of adenovirus E4 transcription unit, which acts early in infection at any of several 'enhancer' binding sites 15xx families."

"Integrating Protel's technology into Atmel's products creates a powerful design platform for programmable logic users, and positions Protel and Atmel for the next wave of advanced design methods," said Nick Martin, Protel's Founder and Executive Director. "This partnership allows Atmel to provide its customers with a complete solution based on Protel's advanced design entry tools, and gives Protel access to Atmel's large and diverse base of customers."

The companies are planning to enhance the capabilities of the Protel design tools, as well as to expand support to other Atmel programmable product lines, including Atmel's Field Programmable System Level IC (FPSLIC FPSLIC Field Programmable System Level Integrated Circuit ) products. ProChip Designer will be distributed via download from the Atmel website at www.Atmel.com as well as on CDROM See CD-ROM. .

Cost of the fully featured ProChip Designer is $995 with no further annual maintenance cost and has no time lock.

PLD designers using Atmel products will be able to register for a free 30 day trial and click through for a download on the same visit. A permanent no-cost version will be made available through authorized Atmel Sales representatives, for fully qualified PLD design projects.

Atmel PLD designers who already have a valid Synario(TM) license may exchange their security key (dongle The term was originally slang for a "hardware key." Today, the term is often used to refer to any small adapter that has a short cable with connectors at both ends. See hardware key and PC Card dongle. ) for an upgrade to ProChip Designer.

ProChip Designer features a full palette of design entry options, including Integrated Protel Schematic Capture, VHDL (VHSIC Hardware Description Language) A hardware description language (HDL) used to design electronic systems at the component, board and system level. VHDL allows models to be developed at a very high level of abstraction.  or CUPL text design entry, Accolade PeakFPGA(TM) Synthesis and the full version of Accolade PeakFPGA Simulation.

Also included in the suite are second generation Atmel device fitters which provide both pre-fit functional simulation and post-fit timing simulation, on-line reference manual, tutorials, and help manual, plus web linked reference and assistance.
