Atmel and Palomar Development Team Back Proposal for New Worldwide Standard for Long Range RFID.

) announced today a new proposal for a standard currently being developed for RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) A data collection technology that uses electronic tags for storing data. These applications, however, require an extended range to realize an operating passive RFID system, which is not possible with the existing RFID solutions.

As a part of the Palomar development project, Atmel has designed the industry's first RFID product that can reach the required distance of up to 4 meters, while radiating no more than 0.5 W at 868 MHz and 4 W at 915 MHz, respectively. Thus conforming to the existing ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute, Sophia Antipolis technical park, Nice, France, www.etsi.org) A non-profit membership organization founded in 1988, dedicated to standardizing information and communication technologies (ICT) throughout Europe.  (see footnote 3) and FCC (see footnote 4) radio regulations. Based on these measurement results, the development team has submitted a proposal to ISO 18000-6 to support the efforts for worldwide RFID standardization.

Palomar (see footnote 1) is an RFID development project funded by the European Commission and is part of the IST (see footnote 2) projects. The project partners Idesco, VTT, Rafsec and Atmel are jointly cooperating to develop new passive long-range RFID solutions from 860 MHz up to 2.45 GHz.

A demo system that can be used for pilot runs in applications like item, parcel and supply management is in development.
