Atmel Targets Wide Range of Temperature Control Applications with Introduction of Low-Cost, Zero-Crossing Switch IC.

Business Editors/High Tech Writers

HEILBRONN, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 14, 2002

Atmel(R) Corporation (Nasdaq: ATML ATML Automatic Test Markup Language
ATML Automated Test Markup Language
) announced today the availability of a low-cost zero-crossing switch IC T2117 especially designed to control resistive resistive /re·sis·tive/ (re-zis´tiv) pertaining to or characterized by resistance.  loads on the AC line in a wide range of temperature control applications.

The device has a maximum current consumption of 0.5 mA which allows the entire circuit to be directly supplied from the mains with only one series resistor, so no additional power supply is required. Additionally, this IC needs only very few inexpensive external components allowing for smaller and more cost effective end applications. Due to the robust bipolar technology used, the circuit fulfills all current ESD (1) (Electronic Software Distribution) Distributing new software and upgrades via the network rather than individual installations on each machine. See ESL.  (Electrostatic Sensitive Device An electrostatic sensitive device (often abbreviated ESD) is any component (primarily electrical) which can be damaged by common static charges which build up on people, tools, and other non-conductors or semiconductors. ) requirements, for protection against spikes from the mains or the connected load, the device needs no external protective components.

The result is a very cost-effective and easy-to-design-in solution for applications that require temperature control such as hair dryers, cookers, heat guns and small heaters. The freely adjustable duration of the ramp generator allows for a wide range of different periodic pulse groups. The full-wave logic of the circuit guarantees that only full mains cycles are used for the load switching, therefore, no DC current proportion appears in the load circuit. To maintain the lamp flicker specifications, the ramp duration can be adjusted according to according to

the connected load and the local specification. The generated negative output pulses are optimized to switch any standard triac.

"The periodic pulse group feature and the full-wave logic are the most important features for temperature-control applications. Conventional solutions do not have both these features on chip, so system designers have had to enable them by means of an external microcontroller and specific software, which is time consuming and costly. Our new T2117 is the industry's only temperature control device having both these features on chip. It will help manufacturers to simplify production while reducing cost," said Wolfgang Dietz, Product Marketing Manager for Industrial Control ICs at Atmel.

Samples of the T2117 in DIP8 or SO8 packages are available now. Pricing starts at $0.35 (10k).
