Atmel Releases Universal Transponder Module for Industrial Tag Assembly.

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

HEILBRONN, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 1, 2000

Atmel Wireless & Microcontrollers, a division of Atmel Corporation (Nasdaq:ATML ATML Automatic Test Markup Language

), released today a new 256-bit read/write transponder A receiver/transmitter on a communications satellite. It receives a microwave signal from earth (uplink), amplifies it and retransmits it back to earth at a different frequency (downlink). A satellite has several transponders.  based on the standard IDIC IDIC Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combination

 cards or standard coins.

The T5554 is designed for batteryless identification systems by drawing the required power from a 125-kHz RF electro magnetic field. An on-chip capacitor (70 pF or 200 pF) and bumped pads (25 micron Au) complete this device. For tag assembly, only an external antenna has to be added.

This new part is the industry's most universal read/write tag for 125-kHz applications with respect to modulation modes and data rates. In contrast to competing devices offering fewer options, the T5554 provides eight different data rates (in a range from 1 kbit to 7.8 kbit) to optimize the application according to according to

 distance and data transfer requirements.

The multi-tag access function, enabling the identification of several transponders in the same field, is based on a transponder-specific password request. Ten separate tags can be read out in less than half of a second.

"We are proud to announce with the T5554 a new member of our broad family of RF identification ICs," said Torsten Mann, Marketing Director for Automotive and Control products at Atmel Wireless & Microcontrollers. "In addition to the sophisticated features our IDICs offer, this new product provides a further step in rationalization which enables our customers to drastically reduce both assembly cost and time."

The T5554 is available with small dimensions (1.37 x 2.65 x 0.28 mm), which allows insertion into plastic ISO cards or industrial coins. It is delivered on sticky tape, blister tape, as die on wafer or die in trace.

Samples and a full qualification package are available now. Pricing for the T5554 starts at $0.54 (50 k). To support the system designer, a demo board with an updated demo software and a design guide including application hints are available.
