Atmel Offers Industry's First DECT RF IC for Non-blind-slot Operation.

Business Editors and Technology Writers

HEILBRONN, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 20, 2001

Atmel(R) Corporation (Nasdaq:ATML ATML Automatic Test Markup Language

) announced today the first non-blind-slot transceiver IC.

The T2801 is a flexible solution for a wide range of DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) A cordless phone standard mostly used in Europe; however, DECT 6.0 is increasingly used worldwide. The first DECT standards were introduced by ETSI in 1992, and DECT phones have been used as cordless home phones as  data and voice applications such as residential cordless phones, WPBX (Wireless Private Branch EXchange) A PBX that supports cordless telephone calls. The T2801 includes image rejection mixer, IF(4) amplifier; FM(5) demodulator See demodulate.

The on-chip transmitter filter (with a modulation compensation circuit for advanced closed loop modulation) and a very fast phase-locked loop settling time enable non-blind-slot operation. Thus, up to 12 slots in each direction can be used, whereas other available solutions provide only up to 4. This feature allows the use of up to 12 handsets with the same base station. Non-blind-slot operation also offers higher data transmit bit rates which is especially important for fast data download (wireless internet access) and fast data transfer to printers (WLAN).

The universal transceiver-to-baseband interface can be used along with any major DECT baseband IC since the transceiver is suitable for both 13.824 MHz and 10.368 MHz clock reference frequency.

The DECT transceiver is completely alignment-free (i.e., mechanical tuning is not necessary). A D/A converter is available for pre-tuning the voltage-controlled oscillator and demodulator via software. For software pre-tuning, a DC voltage needs to be applied to the voltage-controlled oscillator, then the dual-mode prescaler will be re-programmed.

Along with Atmel's successful low-noise amplifier/ power amplifier U7006B, the T2801 transceiver forms a complete DECT system solution that is easy to use. "After having shipped millions of our first-generation DECT RF chip sets since 1998, we are proud to announce this new solution with an outstanding level of integration. This will enable our customers to significantly reduce manufacturing cost," said Ahmad Lindenberg, Product Line Manager at Atmel Wireless & Microcontroller Division. Less than 50 external low-cost components are necessary to build the entire RF part of a DECT system. The U7006B is manufactured using Atmel's advanced Silicon-Germanium (SiGe) process which allows Continuous Wave (CW) operation with a typical Power Added Efficiency (PAE PAE Physical Address Extension

Samples of the T2801 in MLP (Meridian Lossless Packing) The compression technique used in DVD-Audio that provides the highest audio quality. It delivers two channels at 192 kHz with 24-bit samples or six channels at 96 kHz. 48 pin package are available now, high-volume production has started. Samples of the U7006B in SSO16 (head slug) packages are available, high-volume production is running. Pricing starts at $9.30 (10 k) for the T2801 and at $4.93 (10 k) for the U7006B.
