Atmel Introduces SiGe Power Amplifier for CDMA.Business Editors/High-Tech Writers HEILBRONN, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 21, 2001 Atmel(R) Corporation (Nasdaq:ATML ATML Automatic Test Markup Language ATML Automated Test Markup Language ) announced today a jointly developed CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) A method for transmitting simultaneous signals over a shared portion of the spectrum. The foremost application of CDMA is the digital cellular phone technology from QUALCOMM that operates in the 800 MHz band and 1.9 GHz PCS band. (1)/Amps Power Amplifier (PA). This power amplifier is the first product of Atmel and TriQuint's CDMA345(TM) joint development project announced today in a separate press release. Atmel will market the PA under the part number T0360. The T0360 is a 3-V, 2-stage Silicon-Germanium (SiGe) HBT HBT Heterojunction Bipolar Transistor HBT HyCult Biotechnology (Uden, The Netherlands) HBT Hanbury-Brown-Twiss (interferometer) HBT Herring Bone Twill HBT Heflex Bioengineering Test (2) Power Amplifier designed for use in IS-95 and AMPS(3)-compliant mobile phones. Fabricated using Atmel's state-of-the-art power SiGe process and packaged in a 4 x 4 mm leadless chip carrier A chip package that uses flat metal pads that make contact with the socket or circuit board. Contrast with leaded chip carrier. See CLCC. , the T0360 provides phone designers with an extremely small low-cost solution demanded by the latest low-profile CDMA phone designs. The T0360 has an excellent efficiency of 40% and outstanding adjacent channel power rejection of -49 dBc. For improved efficiency, the quiescent current can be switched from a high power setting of 94 mA (used with power output levels up to +28 dBm) to a low power setting of 72 mA (for use with power levels up to 15 dBm). Gain is 28 dB at all power levels. The T0360 is an extremely rugged and reliable part. It can survive an output mismatch of 10:1 at full-power over all phase angles under maximum operating conditions of +4.5 VDC VDC Volts Direct Current VDC Venture Development Corporation VDC Vehicle Dynamic Control VDC Village Development Committee (Nepal) VDC Virtual Data Center VdC Verband der Cigarettenindustrie collector voltage and -20(degree)C to +85(degree)C operating temperature. It features full ESD (1) (Electronic Software Distribution) Distributing new software and upgrades via the network rather than individual installations on each machine. See ESL. protection. Matthias Bopp, Marketing Director at Atmel Wireless & Microcontrollers' Communication Division, said, "Atmel is committed to enter the CDMA market and by the release of this first product, the T0360 power amplifier, we reach a major milestone. It proves the CDMA345(TM) joint development project's capability to design high performance, low-cost power amplifiers. This cellular-band PA T0360 will be followed by a companion PCS-band CDMA PA in Q3/2001 and then by a complete CDMA RF transmit solution later this year." The T0360 utilizes an extremely small, 4 x 4mm leadless chip carrier package for improved performance and to minimize board space utilization. The T0360 is available from stock. Technical support is available along with data sheets and evaluation boards. (1) CDMA = Code Division Multiple Access (2) HBT = Heterojunction Bipolar Transistor The heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) is an improvement of the bipolar junction transistor (BJT) that can handle signals of very high frequencies up to several hundred GHz. It is common in modern ultrafast circuits, mostly radio-frequency (RF) systems. (3) IS-95 and AMPS = North American CDMA Standard and Advanced Mobile Phone Service Advanced Mobile Phone Service, Inc. was a subsidiary of AT&T prior to the Bell System Divestiture. Abbreviated AMPS, the company was created in 1978 to build and operate the new Advanced Mobile Phone System also abbreviated AMPS.
