Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 27, 2000

Atmel Corp. (Nasdaq:ATML ATML Automatic Test Markup Language

) announced today the availability of STK500, a new Starter Kit for the 8-Bit RISC RISC
in full Reduced Instruction Set Computing

Computer architecture that uses a limited number of instructions. RISC became popular in microprocessors in the 1980s.
AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulation) See voltage regulator. (R) Microcontroller family. The STK500 supports all AVR parts that are housed in 8-pin, 20-pin, 28-pin and 40-pin PDIP (Plastic DIP) See DIP.  packages. The parallel and high voltage serial programming capability enables setting and erasure of all fuses and lock bits. All signal lines are connected to a port expander that gives the user the possibility to build expansion boards for their own applications. This shortens development and product to market time. To increase design flexibility, the clocking, voltage and reset system can be controlled via the software in AVR Studio, which increases design flexibility. MS-DOS MS-DOS

Operating system for personal computers. MS-DOS was based on DOS, developed in 1980 by Seattle Computer Products. Microsoft Corp. bought the rights to DOS in 1981, and released MS-DOS with IBM's PC that year.
programming software enables efficient batch conversion to support production programming. Field upgrades via software can be used to add support for future AVR parts.

"The philosophy of the STK500(TM) is to provide an easy-to-use debugging and programming platform," said Thomas Richter, product line manager for AVR microcontrollers. "The STK500 programming interface is included in our Integrated Development Environment See IDE.

The In-System programming of the Flash and the EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable ROM) A rewritable memory chip that holds its content without power. Although EEPROMs spawned flash memory, EEPROMs are byte addressable at the write level, whereas flash chips must erase a block of bytes before rewriting.  memory can be done in the starter kit socket or via cable in the application socket."

The STK500 supports the following available products: 90S1200; 90S2313; 90S2323; 90S2343; 90S4433; 90S8515; 90S8535; tiny11; tiny12; tiny15, tiny28; mega161; mega163; as well as future products.

The recommended resale price of the new Starter Kit is $79. The user guide and the product flyer are available on the Atmel Web Site, www.atmel.com.
