Atmel Introduces New Direct Quadrature Modulator with Excellent Noise Floor Performance.Business Editors/High-Tech Writers HEILBRONN, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 4, 2001 Atmel(R) Corporation (Nasdaq:ATML ATML Automatic Test Markup Language ATML Automated Test Markup Language ) announced today the availability of the single 5-V direct quadrature modulator T0790 operating at 800-2500 MHz. This new standard RF device manufactured in Atmel's advanced SiGe technology provides outstanding noise floor performance. The broad range of applications includes digital infrastructure systems for cellular mobile telephones such as GSM/ DCS/ PCS/ UMTS/ CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) A method for transmitting simultaneous signals over a shared portion of the spectrum. The foremost application of CDMA is the digital cellular phone technology from QUALCOMM that operates in the 800 MHz band and 1.9 GHz PCS band. 2000 and ISM (see footnote 1) band transceivers which can perform GMSK/ QPSK/ QAM/ 8PSK (see footnote 2) modulation schemes. The T0790's main benefit is its outstanding performance. Due to the SiGe technology used, the direct quadrature modulator shows excellent noise floor performance (-154 dBm) for improved transmit quality. This noise behavior even exceeds the GSM standard requirements regarding the overall transmit path. Moreover, the T0790 quadrature modulator provides very good carrier and sideband sideband, any frequency component of a modulated carrier wave other than the frequency of the carrier wave itself, i.e., any frequency added to the carrier as a result of modulation; sidebands carry the actual information while the carrier contributes none at all. suppression to improve the quality of the end signal without the need for an oscillator driver and extra filters, as with conventional solutions. Because the T0790 is less complex and not so highly integrated as very specialized RF components, it can be implemented very easily and quickly. All I/Os of the new device are matched to 50 Ohms, so no passive circuitry is needed. The resulting low external component count, as well as its wide applicability, combine to speed up and simplify design-ins for faster time to market at reduced costs. The baseband input has a wide frequency range and thus supports a broad range of applications. "We are proud to present with the T0790 a real breakthrough product that combines universal usability and outstanding performance," Carsten Friedrich, Atmel's marketing manager for Standard RF products said. "Apart from the performance, quality and reliability stand out as key features for infrastructure applications. Because the T0790 is manufactured using our advanced SiGe technology, the device features low thermal sensitivity which results in high reliability and longer life time of the device."
