Underwriters Laboratories Underwriters Laboratories Inc. is a U.S. not-for-profit, privately owned and operated product safety testing and certification organization. Based in Northbrook, Illinois, UL develops standards and test procedures for products, materials, components, assemblies, tools and (UL) issued the registration. This award is a significant step in Atmel's worldwide environmental and quality excellence program. The ISO 14001 standard, like its quality counterpart ISO 9001/QS 9000, is based on the concepts of self-evaluation and continuous improvement. Atmel is committed to conducting business in an environmentally sound manner. The process of obtaining this certification included identifying and managing specific environmental risks and implementing pollution prevention and reduction programs. As part of the certification, specific water and energy reduction objectives were created and implemented. In addition, Atmel's existing chemical reduction plan was enhanced prior to certification. Recycling programs were active prior to beginning the ISO certification but were improved through the process. The Colorado Springs site is Atmel's largest wafer production facility and presently employs approximately 2000 people.
