Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

HEILBRONN, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 20, 2001

Atmel(R) Corporation (Nasdaq:ATML ATML Automatic Test Markup Language
ATML Automated Test Markup Language
) announced today that it is cooperating within a European project with various RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) A data collection technology that uses electronic tags for storing data. The tag, also known as an "electronic label," "transponder" or "code plate," is made up of an RFID chip attached to an antenna.  component and system providers on a new passive long-range RFID solutions at 860 MHz up to 2.45 GHz.

The development of the new RFID solution for long-range applications is part of the IST(1) project supported by the European commission and initiated by the scientific institute VTT VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland
VTT Valtion Teknillinen Tutkimuskeskus (Finnish: Technical Research Centre of Finland)
VTT VĂ©lo Tout Terrain (French: mountain bike; aka ATB or MTB)
and the companies Idesco, Atmel and Gemplus.

The focus of this joint cooperation is to develop an RFID solution for UHF (Ultra High Frequency) The range of electromagnetic frequencies from 300 MHz to 3 GHz. In the U.S., analog television has used UHF channels 52 to 69 in the 700 MHz band.  and microwaves (860 MHz up to 2.45 GHz). The aim is to achieve by mid of 2002 a world-wide accepted passive RFID platform -- suitable for standardization -- that conforms to the ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute, Sophia Antipolis technical park, Nice, France, www.etsi.org) A non-profit membership organization founded in 1988, dedicated to standardizing information and communication technologies (ICT) throughout Europe. (2) and FCC (1) (Federal Communications Commission, Washington, DC, www.fcc.gov) The U.S. government agency that regulates interstate and international communications including wire, cable, radio, TV and satellite. The FCC was created under the U.S. (3) radio regulations.

Target applications that will benefit from the RFID solution are the item and supply chain management first in the paper industry, but will also be suited for other applications such as parcel, laundry and library applications.

A first demonstrator comprising reader IC and tag will be presented at the Frontline Show 2001 in Chicago.
