The new 4-Mbit (AT17LV040) Configurator utilizes the 2-wire industry standard serial interface for ISP. This extends Atmel's protocol compatible AT17 series family to an industry leading seven densities: 65K, 128K, 256K, 512K, 1M, 2M and 4-Mbit. Uniquely, Atmel's different density ISP parts can all be in-system-programmed with the same basic programming algorithms offering software standardization and reduced development costs for FPGA users who use the parts to store the programmable logic's personality.

Like all other members of the popular AT17 series family, the 4-Mbit devices can directly replace existing OTP (one-time programmable) devices in the same socket. Cascadable to support higher density FPGA products these ultra-low power devices can be in-system-programmed using Atmel's Windows(R)-based software tools. Addtionally, memory not used to store the FPGA configuration code can be used as general purpose non-volatile memory storage, saving additional board space and bill of materials The list of components that make up a system. For example, a bill of materials for a house would include the cement block, lumber, shingles, doors, windows, plumbing, electric, heating and so on.  costs.

Priced competitively with standard OTP (one-time programmable) solutions, Atmel's ISP solution is available now in space saving 44 pin TQFP See QFP.  and 44 pin PLCC (Plastic Leaded Chip Carrier) A plastic, square, surface mount chip package that contains leads on all four sides. The leads (pins) extend down and back under and into tiny indentations in the housing. See chip package.  package options. Features such as remote update capabilities and a simple programming interface make these parts well suited to telecom and network applications. Pin compatible packaging and a broad product line allows for risk free migration of existing designs as new features are added.

"As FPGA designs and configuration memory requirements get larger the cost of the in-system programmability of Atmel's AT17 Series reprogrammable parts become even more compelling," states Martin Mason, Atmel's Programmable SLi marketing manager. "By directly replace existing OTP solutions with our ISP capable devices, customers are saving time, money and reducing their design risk. This is accomplished by being able to change the FPGA design code at different stages of development, production and even after the product has been deployed in the field. Atmel offers the broadest range and easiest to use ISP configuration memory solutions in the industry today," Mason concluded.

Pricing and Availability

All seven Configurator densities (65K, 128K, 256K, 512K, 1M, 2M and 4M) are available today. Prices start at under $2 (10K units) for the 65K AT1717LV65. The 4Mbit AT17LV040 part is priced from $23.60 (10K units).
