Atlas Communication Engines Announces New Version of the Atlas Communication Operating System - Revolutionary New RTOS For OEM Internetworking Equipment.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 2, 1999--

Combined with its Diamond Internetworking System, Atlas' ACOS (language) ACOS - A BBS language for PRODOS 8 on Apple II. Macos is a hacked version of ACOS.  Software

The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  Communications Platform

Atlas Communication Engines, Inc., a leader in the design and manufacture of OEM internetworking products for corporate Internet and remote office connectivity, today announced a new version of its Atlas Communication Operating System (ACOS(TM)), an embedded real-time operating system (operating system) Real-Time Operating System - (RTOS) Any operating system where interrupts are guaranteed to be handled within a certain specified maximum time, thereby making it suitable for control of hardware in embedded systems and other time-critical applications.  for communications operations.

Atlas packages ACOS with its Diamond Internetworking System(TM), a flexible, modular hardware product, to create a revolutionary new platform for the design and production of networking products. Applications include Integrated Access Devices (IADs), web servers, ATM access concentrators, mini DSLAMs, wireless or cable modem network platforms, VPN (Virtual Private Network) A private network that is configured within a public network (a carrier's network or the Internet) in order to take advantage of the economies of scale and management facilities of large networks.  routers, voice over IP/ATM gateways, set top boxes, etc. The latest version of ACOS will offer support for Frame Relay, Frame Relay/ATM interworking (standard) interworking - Systems or components, possibly from different origins, working together to perform some task. Interworking depends crucially on standards to define the interfaces between the components. , multiple virtual connections, SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc.  management and advanced API management.

"The Diamond Internetworking System represents the next generation OEM networking solution, bringing together a modular hardware platform with an operating system specifically designed for communications applications," noted David Adleman, Atlas Communication Engines' director of business development. "The ACOS model is unique in the embedded systems market because it comes free with the Diamond Internetworking System, creating a complete communication engine that can be rapidly and cost-effectively customized for OEM needs. Compared to the alternative of building your own system or having to purchase separate hardware and software components and integrate them, the Diamond/ACOS combination saves manufacturers both time and money, enabling them to speed new products to market. This can reduce development times down to weeks instead of months."

Added Features

ACOS is optimized for communications applications, allowing for the easy addition of customized Network Interface Modules (NIMs) to the Diamond system and supporting functionality such as VPN, Encryption, Firewall, Custom Graphical User Interface graphical user interface (GUI)

Originally a centralized architecture with a host computer controlling many terminals, enhancements, such as APPN and APPC (LU 6. , Voice over IP, etc. To eliminate the typical royalty and licensing fees normally associated with networking product development, Atlas has removed the need to link the application software with the operating system.

The latest version of ACOS adds the following new features and functionality: -0-
-- full Frame Relay support, allowing the Diamond platform to be
used for development of Frame Relay Access Devices or Frame Relay
     capable routers.

-- Frame Relay/ATM Internetworking, enabling complete
interoperability between Frame Relay and ATM networks.

-- multiple virtual connection support, allowing multiple remote
locations to be centrally served over a single ATM or Frame relay
connection, as well as allowing different protocols to be
transported over a single physical interface.

-- Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) support, allowing more
seamless integration into existing server provider networks from
     a management standpoint.

-- advanced API management, enabling customers to easily customize
     management and interface applications.
