Atlas Air Crewmembers Vote Against Labor Contract.

PURCHASE, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 19, 2002

In a vote announced today, the pilots and flight engineers employed by Atlas Air Atlas Air is an American cargo airline based in Purchase, New York, United States. It operates scheduled freight flights on an ACMI contract basis for some of the world's leading airlines, flying to 101 cities in 46 countries. , Inc. and represented by the Air Line Pilots Association declined to ratify the tentative labor agreement reached with the Company on January 25, 2002.

"Clearly, we are disappointed with this outcome," said Bill Allen, Senior Vice President of Human Resources for Atlas Air, Inc. "The tentative agreement was the product of a great deal of hard work by both parties and reflected the unique nature of Atlas Air's ACMI business. However, we still hope to put a contract with our crewmembers in place sooner rather than later, and we continue to be optimistic that we will be able to satisfactorily conclude these negotiations."

Negotiations between Atlas Air and its flight crewmembers are conducted pursuant to the terms and conditions of the Railway Labor Act The Railway Labor Act is a United States federal law that governs labor relations in the railway and airline industries.. The Act, passed in 1926 and amended in 1936 to apply to the airline industry, seeks to substitute bargaining, arbitration and mediation for strikes as a means , and are under the direction of the National Mediation Board The National Mediation Board is a three-person board created in 1934 by an act amending the Railway Labor Act (45 U.S.C.A. §§ 151–158, 160–162, 1181–1188) to resolve disputes in the railroad and airline industries that could disrupt travel or imperil the .

"We are ready to return to the bargaining table as soon as new sessions are scheduled by the mediator," Allen added. "Currently, we expect that will be in early March."
