THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 10, 2000 Atlantic Tele-Network, Inc. (AMEX AMEX See: American Stock Exchange :ANK ANK Ankara (Turkey) ANK Attempted, Not Known ANK Alphanumeric Keyboard ANK Anunaki (ancient Sumerian Gods) ), released today international traffic figures for its subsidiary, the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company Limited ("GT&T") for the third quarter of 2000 and other recent developments. Audiotext traffic, which has significantly lower profit margins than does regular in-bound international traffic, was down 75% from the third quarter last year. This trend continues the 67% year to year decline of audiotext traffic previously reported for the second quarter. Regular in-bound international traffic, which carries the highest profit margins of all of GT&T's international traffic, increased by 1.6% over the third quarter last year. Access lines in service increased to 68,794 from 63,552 one year ago, bringing Guyana close to a 10% teledensity rate, without counting about 5,000 additional cellular lines. The Company also announced site selection and equipment orders for the start of a web-enabled operator center in Guyana for which the Government has given the Company a five year tax holiday. Cornelius B. Prior, Jr. Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Atlantic Tele-Network, Inc. said "Although in-bound international traffic was down 1.9% from the preceding quarter it was up 1.6% from the third quarter of last year, despite the continued refusal of AT&T to send U.S. traffic to Guyana directly. Some states call it the Public Service Commission (PSC). of Guyana, which is presently considering our request for increased rates, since these access lines and traffic are the result of significant investment by GT&T."
