Atlantic Research Corporation to Develop Composite Case Manufacturing Technology for the U.S. Navy.

GAINESVILLE, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 15, 1999--

Atlantic Research Corporation (ARC) has been selected by the U.S. Navy Center of Excellence for Composites Manufacturing Technology (CECMT CECMT Center of Excellence for Composites Manufacturing Technology ) to conduct a program to develop and demonstrate technologies that will enable the cost-effective manufacture of filament-wound composite motor cases for air-launch missile applications.

In addition to providing improved propulsion performance, composite rocket motor cases are viewed by the U.S. Navy as a critical element in achieving Insensitive Munitions Insensitive munitions are munitions which reliably fulfil their performance, readiness and operational requirements on demand, but which minimise the probability of inadvertent initiation and severity of subsequent collateral damage to weapons platforms, logistic systems and  (IM) compliance for its weapon systems. IM design features reduce the effect of the rocket's response to unplanned stimuli, such as heat, shock, and projectile projectile

ARC will conduct the program through the Great Lakes Great Lakes, group of five freshwater lakes, central North America, creating a natural border between the United States and Canada and forming the largest body of freshwater in the world, with a combined surface area of c.95,000 sq mi (246,050 sq km).  Composite Consortium with support from other member companies. The program is part of a Navy-led initiative to develop composite airframe and rocket motor technology to the level of maturity required for use on fielded weapon systems. ARC, long recognized as a pioneer in developing advanced material solutions for commercial and military applications, will focus on affordable manufacturing approaches applied to a baseline Navy air-launched tactical composite rocket motor case design.

The program will address critical technologies applicable to composite manufacturing, including the implementation of advanced filament winding Filament winding is a fabrication technique for creating composite material structures. The process involves winding filaments under varying amounts of tension over a male mould or mandrel.  techniques, improved process control methodologies, improved materiel ma·te·ri·el or ma·té·ri·el

properties characterization testing, and refined case attachment concepts. The goal of these improvements is to enhance design reliability and reduce product variability.

The rocket motor design adopted as a baseline was developed on the Navy Insensitive Munitions Technology Transition Program (IMTTP). The IMTTP is being conducted to establish a modified flight clearance process and demonstrate the maturity of composite motor case technology through captive-carry flight testing of a composite short-range air-to-air missile Noun 1. air-to-air missile - a missile designed to be launched from one airplane at another

Combined, these programs will provide a path for significant advances in system safety and improved performance to be implemented in future air-launched missiles.
