Atlantic Coast Airlines Posts 18.8% Increase in October Traffic.


DULLES, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 4, 1997--Atlantic Coast Airlines (NASDAQ/National Market: ACAI), which operates in the Eastern United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  as United Express, Tuesday announced preliminary passenger traffic results for the month of October 1997.

The company generated 41,269,000 revenue passenger miles Revenue passenger miles (RPMs) is a measure of a passenger traffic for an airline flight, bus, or train calculated by multiplying the total number of revenue-paying passengers aboard the vehicle by the distance traveled measured in miles.  (RPMs), an 18.8 percent increase over the same month last year, while available seat miles Available seat miles (ASM) is a measure of an airline flight's passenger carrying capacity. It is equal to the number of seats available multiplied by the number of miles flown. This measures an airlines capacity for transporting passengers.  (ASMs) increased to 77,343,000, an increase of 11.7 percent, resulting in a 3.2 point load factor increase.

The carrier's load factor in October was 53.4 percent vs. 50.2 percent in 1996. The company carried 166,110 passengers in October 1997, an 18.5 percent increase over October 1996.

For the 10 months ended Oct. 31, 1997, compared to the same 10-month period in 1996, RPMs grew to 339,763,000, an increase of 12.5 percent year over year, while ASMs were 695,166,000, and 8.4 percent increase, resulting in a 1.8 point load factor increase.

The company carried 1,366,726 passengers for the 10 months ended Oct. 31, 1997, compared to 1,233,377 in 1996, an increase of 10.8 percent on a year-over-year basis.
