Atlanta Traveler Information Showcase features Etak mapping technology.ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 14, 1996--Etak Inc., a leader in digital mapping technology and pioneer in car navigation systems, and several partners have developed three innovative traveler information systems that will ease travel for visitors coming to Atlanta from June 1 to Sept. 30, a period coinciding with the Olympic and Paralympic Games. These systems will provide information to travelers about real-time traffic conditions, public transportation options and a variety of other topics important to summer visitors as part of the official Atlanta Traveler Information Showcase. Real-time traffic information, furnished by Georgia DOT, metro traffic control and other sources will be received from computer systems developed by TRW, processed by Etak Traffic Workstations and transmitted to the users in the following three showcase projects. The Personal Travel Guide uses Etak digital maps, a Hewlett Packard palmtop palmtop or hand-held personal computer, lightweight, small, battery-powered, general-purpose programmable computer. It typically has a miniaturized full-function, typewriterlike keyboard for input and a small, full color, liquid-crystal display computer and a two-way paging system from Skytel. These hand-held computers will feature live traffic reports, turn-by-turn directions to any location, news of accidents, traffic jams and alternate routes if needed, as well as alternate means of transportation. A 20MB smart card supplied by SanDisk plugs into the palmtop to provide Etak's complete digital street map of Atlanta and surrounding areas as well as Etak's extensive street address files and "digital yellow pages" for the region. The Etak database includes listings of stores, restaurants, hotels, banks, gas stations, medical facilities, train stations and locations for special events. A second traveler information system, interactive television, will be available in 300 rooms at the Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza Ravinia Hotel in Dunwoody, Ga., where guests of the hotel will be able to select and view yellow pages, public transportation, real-time traffic and other tourist information using TV remote controllers. The third system using Etak technology will allow cable TV companies in Atlanta to set up and broadcast channels that will provide up-to-the-minute reports established to disseminate real-time traffic and transit conditions to viewers. Map-based traffic and other traveler information will be generated by an automated production facility provided by Etak.
