Atlanta Gas Light Company and WSB Radio To Honor the Late Mayor Maynard Jackson With Shining Light Award.

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 18, 2003

Atlanta Gas Light Company (AGLC) and WSB Radio announced today that former Mayor Maynard Jackson, who died earlier this year, will be honored with the 2003 Shining Light Award, which has become over its 40-year history a traditional way to honor outstanding leaders.

Jackson's widow, Valerie, will receive the honor on behalf of her late husband. Jackson joins an impressive listing of past honorees, including former President Jimmy Carter, former mayor and Ambassador Andrew Young, Senator Zell Miller, philanthropist and businessman J.B. Fuqua and baseball legend Hank Aaron.

Shining Light awards, eternally-burning natural gas lamps, adorn many corners of Atlanta. The award is an old-time gaslight erected in a location that is meaningful to the recipient. For example, Young's award is located next to the Andrew Young School of International Studies at Morehouse College while Fuqua's is on the grounds of the Atlanta Botanical Garden.

"Mayor Jackson is being honored for his many achievements during his three terms as mayor of Atlanta, including creating new opportunities in government and business for women and minorities," said Paula G. The location of the award will be announced during a luncheon for community and business leaders along with Jackson family members in February.

The Shining Light Award has been presented posthumously only two times: to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1989 and to educator Martha Berry of Rome in 1966. The award has become a great honor, thanks in part to the caliber of Georgians who have received it.
