Atkins Selected For $47 million Construction Program At Andrews Air Force Base, Home of Air Force One.

The U.S. Air Force (www.af.mil) has selected Atkins Americas (London Stock Exchange London Stock Exchange

London marketplace for securities. It was formed in 1773 by a group of stockbrokers who had been doing business informally in local coffeehouses.

It is the chief military airport of Washington, D.C., as well as the headquarters for the air force's high-priority airlift command.  (www.andrews.af.mil), home of the Presidential air fleet.

The family housing - some of it dating back to 1948 - will be torn down and replaced by new homes that provide modern conveniences.

During the project's initial $20.6 million phase; four new homes will be built for general officers, and 46 additional homes for senior and field-grade officers. The single-family houses - a combination of two- and one-story structures - will range in size from 4,000 sq. ft. to 2,300 sq. ft.

The second, $26.4 million phase will include replacement of commissioned officer family housing.

Additional phases are in various stages of planning.

Andrews has 24,000 active-duty, reserve and civilian staff and 10,000 family members, and includes 384 officer and 1,694 enlisted family quarters.

While the 4,320-acre base was established as Camp Springs Army Air Field during World War II, Andrews' lineage can be traced back to the Civil War, when Union troops occupied a small country church near Camp Springs, Md., as sleeping quarters. That same church is still used on the base and is called Chapel Two.
