Athletics St Helens-Sutton clean sweep in cross country.

THERE were top three places for Chelsea Jarvis, John Ashcroft John David Ashcroft (born May 9 1942) is an American politician who was the 79th United States Attorney General. Jarvis finished first in the under-13 girls' competition and combined with Rachel Wilcock and Vicky Lamb to take third place for the second match in a row.

Daniel Elston, running in the first of three under-11 races, was third and took the teamaward with Owen Kennedy (10) and Jonathan Causer (15). The under-11 girls' trio of Rosie Johnson (4), Elisha Cain (11) and Danielle Webb (19) were second in their contest.

Sarah Charnock (5), Gemma Connolly (10), Julia Eccleston (29) and Karen Jarvis (37) steered the senior ladies into second place on the day and the club now stands third overall.

Warrington's Louisa Tanner was an excellent second and Liverpool's Kath Upton seventh.

The under-15 girls' trio of Jemma Shaw (4), Heather Drillingcourt (12) and Natalie Garrity (18) claimed fourth spot behind Warrington's Rachael Jefferson (3), Vicky Hamilton (10) and Katie Ashcroft (17).

In the under-17 contest Saints' Jake Healy (11), Steve Clague (17) and AdamFackey (21) retained sixth place.

The best placed senior man was Matt Cullen Matthew "Matt" Cullen (born November 2, 1976 in Virginia, Minnesota) is a professional ice hockey centre who currently plays for the Carolina Hurricanes of the NHL. He is the older brother of Detroit Red Wings player Mark Cullen.  (8), while Dennis Wharton was the seventh over 50 veteran to finish. Gill Laithwaite continued on her comeback after injury by taking fourth spot in the Brampton to Carlisle 10 mile road race, while Tahud Wahid was 15th in the Heanor 10k.

 (13) and Rick Bowker (19) - both Southport - and Wirral's Chris Henry (Wirral), who finished eighteenth, were prominent at the Preston 10 miler.

The Sandgrounders' Steve James and Sue Cooper helped England to teamwins in the Over 65 and Over 50 age groups in the British and Irish Masters' Championships held at Stormont Castle near Belfast.

This weekend the main cross country event is the UK Challenge match run alongside both the Liverpool and District and Mid Lancs League races at Sefton Park. The Challenge event includes the UK trials for the European Cross Country Championships.

Numerous local athletes have entered. It starts at 11am (U11 Girls and Boys) with the European Junior Men, Senior Ladies and Senior Men starting at 12.55, 13.20 and 14.00 hours respectively. On Sunday the Salford Women's 5.25k road race takes place at Swinton while further afield there is the Abbey Dash 10k at Leeds.
