Athletics: Pontypool whizz kid strikes silver in Scotland.

YOUNG sprinter Andrew Watkins smashed through the 11-second barrier for the 100m when winning the silver medal for Welsh Schools in the British Schools Under-17 international in Scotland.

Watkins, the 14-year-old schoolboy from Pontypool, was selected to step up to the next age group after impressive performances in the Welsh Championships. But the youngster, coached by Colin Daley, lived up to his growing reputation and stopped the clock at 10.99 secs with his teammate Calvin McLaggon fourth in 11.19 secs.

McLaggan made up for his disappointment by taking the bronze medal in the 200m in 22.70 secs.

However there were few other successes for the team. Sally Hinds won gold in the shot putt (12.54m), Robert Lightfoot finished third in the 400m (49.84secs) and joined with Ashley Bayliss, A Jenkins and P Heatley to take silver in the 4x400m relay.
