Athletics: HUGGINS MAKES FLAGPOLE VAULT; YOUNG ATHLETE OF YEAR.

Byline: By Alan Marshall

FOR proud Scott Huggins it was the easiest decision he will ever have to make in his athletics career - to swap the cross of St George for the Scottish Saltire.

The pole vaulter was born and brought up south of the border but is now dreaming of a place in Scotland's 2010 Commonwealth Games Commonwealth games, series of amateur athletic meets held among citizens of countries in the Commonwealth of Nations. Originated (1930) as the British Empire games, the series is held every four years and is patterned after the Olympic games; women have participated  squad in Delhi .

Flying the flag for Scotland came naturally for the Blackheath & Bromley Harrier. He is from a family bursting with Scottish sporting credentials - dad David kept goal for Hibs in the 1970s.

Huggins said: "I feel like I've adopted that nationality because my parents have both played elite sport for Scotland. I want to be part of that and keep it in the family Keep It In The Family may refer to:
  • Keep It In The Family (game show), an American game show
  • Keep it in the Family (TV series), a British comedy series
."

The Kent teenager got the year offto a flying start when he won the Scottish Under-20 indoor title in February.

Silver at the English Schools Championships in July was followed by gold at the Celtic Games in Ireland where he set a personal and championship best of 4.70metres.

That makes him a contender for our Daily Record Young Athlete of the Year Athlete of the Year

  • ACC Athlete of the Year
  • Associated Press Athlete of the Year
  • U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year
  • United Press International Athlete of the Year Award
award, to be presented at the Norwich Union Norwich Union is an insurance company in the UK. It is the biggest life-insurer in the UK, and has a strong position in motor insurance. It is part of the Aviva group, itself created by a merger of Norwich Union and CGU plc in 2000.  International in Glasgow on January 27.

Scott's performances are all the more impressive given a horrific accident earlier this year when he fell four metres on to concrete.

But then it's no great surprise he is reaching new heights - Huggins' trains six times a week, come rain or shine.

He said: "It's hard when it's cold and you've got to put in the hard graft but I just think of how far I'd like to get in the sport.

"I like the sense of achievement and I know that if I do put the effort in now I'll reap results next year.

"Next year I'm hoping to beat the five-metre mark, aim to represent Scotland at the Commonwealth Games and compete at the London Olympics in 2012."

Former Olympic and Commonwealth pole vaulter Allan Williams coaches the 17-year-old and he believes there is every chance Huggins will go on to give his adopted country rare success in the pole vault arena.

Williams said: "Scott has a real possibility of doing Scotland proud as a competitor and he deserves every support he can get."
