Athletics: Bekele misses out on record.


KENENISA BEKELE Kenenisa Bekele (born June 13, 1982, Ethiopia) is an Ethiopian distance runner, one of the most successful distance runners of all time and considered by some as a modern-day great.  narrowly missed improving his own world 5000 metres record at last night's IAAF IAAF

The 23-year-old Ethiopian, who led for the last six-and-half laps, broke his only serious rival and countryman, Abiyote Abate, with 1600m left as he finished in a time of 12 minutes 40.18 seconds.

Earlier, Britain's Jo Pavey finished third over 3000m in 8mins 34.66secs behind the Kenyan pair of Edith Masai Edith Chewangel Masai (born April 4, 1967) is a Kenyan track athlete. Her best achievements are three individual gold medals in the IAAF World Cross Country Championships.

Masai was born in Chepkoya village, Bungoma District.
, who set a world lead for the year of 8:31.27, and Isabella Ochichi, who clocked 8:33.59.

Another Brit, Timothy Benjamin, was fourth in the 400m in 45.40, finishing behind Canadian Tyler Christopher (44.69), American Derrick Brew (45.30) and Christopher Brown (45.31) of the Bahamas.
