Athletic greats of Red Raiders inducted into FHS Hall of Fame.

LEOMINSTER - The grand ballroom at the Four Points Hotel in Leominster was packed earlier this month for the fifth induction ceremony of Fitchburg High School's Athletic Hall of Fame.

For Hall of Fame inductees Fred Sullivan Frederic Sullivan (25 November 1837(1837--) – 18 January 1877) was an English actor and singer. He is best remembered as the creator of the role of the Learned Judge in Gilbert and Sullivan's Trial by Jury  and Roger Kielty, it was a magical afternoon among so many friends, athletes and supporters of Red Raider athletics.

Mr. Sullivan, a former Fitchburg High teacher and a member of the school's class of 1960, was honored for his dedicated service and interest in Fitchburg High sports, and, in particular, his ongoing work as the game announcer at Crocker Field.

Mr. Kielty, from the class of 1959, came all the way from California for the ceremony. He was a star football and baseball player for the Red Raiders Red Raiders can refer to sports teams at:
  • Barnstable High School in Barnstable, Massachusetts, USA
  • Ocean City High School in Ocean City, New Jersey, USA
  • Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, USA
  • Wauwatosa East High School in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA
 a half-century ago.

The 68-year-old Mr. Kielty said that his son Bobby, the same Bobby Kielty Robert Michael ("Bobby") Kielty (last name pronounced KELT-E) (born August 5, 1976) is an American born outfielder with the Boston Red Sox. He is one of few baseball players who bat without the use of batting gloves. College
Kielty was born in Fontana, California.
 who played for the Boston Red Sox The Boston Red Sox are a professional baseball team based in Boston, Massachusetts. The Red Sox are a member and currently champions of the Eastern Division of Major League Baseball’s American League. From to the present, the Red Sox have played in Fenway Park.  in 2007 and helped the team win the World Series, is recovering from knee surgery.

"He wants to play again," said his father. "He may even have a chance to come back as a pitcher. He also has a team in Japan that is very interested in him."

Praising Mr. Kielty and recalling the good old days, Mr. Sullivan, who was a Fitchburg High baseball teammate of his, said, "Roger went 105 yards on a kickoff against St. Bernard's St. Bernard's can refer to:

  • St. Bernard's College, Lower Hutt

 and he simply dominated one of the greatest Fitchburg vs. Leominster Thanksgiving Day games ever, back in 1958. It was a sunny day, but very cold. The field was muddy, and Leominster just could not stop Roger. He gained over 150 yards."

Mr. Kielty recalled, "Playing in the Thanksgiving Day game was the event of the year, just super to be involved in."

The other inductees were:

Lauri Myllykangas, a four-sport athlete and captain of championship basketball teams, from the class of 1927.

Roland Blake, football captain, basketball and baseball star from the class of 1931.

The 1933 Fitchburg High football team, undefeated and untied and coached by Clarence Amiott,

Raymond Belliveau, a superb football, basketball and baseball player from the class of 1933.

Ronnie Watson, a smart, talented basketball player for the Red and Gray from the class of 1946, who went on to become a star at Trinity College.

Joe Hannon, a terrific sprinter, undefeated in dual track meets during his junior and senior seasons, from the class of 1951.

Leon Drury, a talented basketball player, skilled with the jump shot and a leader on the court, from the class of 1962.

Ray Haaker, an outstanding half-miler and quarter-miler on the track team, from the class of 1973.

Mike LeBlanc, a top-notch defensive end and leader of the football team, from the class of 1983.

Cindy Coleman-Donelan, one of the finest track stars to compete for the Red Raiders, from the class of 1987.

Todd Steffanides, a versatile three-sport athlete who led the football team to a cherished win over Brockton, from the class of 1995.

Shelly Richard, a field hockey, softball and basketball star from the class of 1997.
