Athletic: Top award for battling Katherine; Junior Sport.

SHOT putter Katherine McBeth scooped the award for the best female field performance as Coventry Godiva Harriers finished a battling second to Amber Valley in their National Young Athletes League match at Derby.

Despite a shortage of athletes in some events at the Midlands One East meeting, the city squad finished just 19 points adrift after a full day of competition with Leamington C&AC in third place.

McBeth threw 10.22 metres to win the under-17 girls shot, and added a personal best of 30- 21 for victory in the B-string javelin to complete a maximum haul with A winner Sam Cullinane (34.01).

Danielle Smith (9.38) also made sure of full points in the shot as she led the B field.

On the track, Rowena Cole was narrowly beaten into second place in the 300 metres in a fine personal best of 41.8 seconds with Becky O'Brien (45.7) winning the B race, and the pair then teamed up with 800 metres winner Georgina Holt and Davina Cole to secure victory in the 4 x 300 relay in a club record time of 2-56.0.

Emily McNeice had an outstanding day in the Under-15 section with a 100 and 200 metres double in 13.3 and 27.2 - the latter a personal best - topped up by victory in the high jump (1.35). Hannah Stanley (27.9) also registered a new best to win the B 200 as well as securing the A long jump (4.55), and Gracie Jack posted an A shot (7.73) and discus (18.95 pb) double as well as winning the B 75 metres hurdles (14.3).

Lauren Downing (2-25.7) again lowered her best for 800 metres to lead an A and B double with Zoe Bryden (2-38.3), and the quartet of Downing, Mary Suffield, McNeice and Stanley clocked a winning 53.7 in the 4 x 100 relay.

The Under-13 girls recorded four A wins through Sam Jenkins (75m 10.8 pb), Sophie Daffern (150m 21.5), Naomi Richardson (800m 2-30.1 pb) and Lucy Smith (shot 7.84 pb). RUGBY & Northampton AC scored a runaway victory in their home Midlands One East fixture with Nic Evangelinos voted top male track performer for his winning time of 12.8 seconds in the Under-13 boys 75 metres hurdles.

Evangelinos clocked a AAA Grade 1 standard as he won the race by the wide margin of 1.9 seconds, and he also secured first place in the long jump with a leap of 4.37 metres.

Other Grade 1 performances came from Rugby winners Craig Murch (U-15 javelin 44.10), Charlotte Burrows in both the Under-15 girls 100 (12.5) and 200 metres (26.3), and Kerry Murch in the Under-13 girls 70 metres hurdles (11.9) and long jump (4.43).
