Athletes on track for major honours.

Local youngsters are hoping for success at a major national meeting in the North-east this weekend.

The English Schools Athletic Association national championships take place at Gateshead Stadium tomorrow and Saturday, organised by the Northumberland schools association.

Cleveland are sending the maximum allowed squad of 25 to the competition of ten counties that is often called the "Kids Olympics".

This year Cleveland have a very strong team and have had to omit several talented youngsters.

The senior boys team compiles nearly half the total squad and includes several medal prospects.

Last year as an intermediate, Dean Daniel smashed the 200m record and this year will be aiming to nudge the 21 second barrier.

Last weekend he was in action for the Great Britain Great Britain, officially United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, constitutional monarchy (2005 est. pop. 60,441,000), 94,226 sq mi (244,044 sq km), on the British Isles, off W Europe.  and Adam Robson again contest the 100m and have run a shade below 11 seconds and along with Daniel and Steven Lince will be the 4 x 100m relay squad with Michael Mazuarinwofa and North-east indoor sprint champion Chris Jones as reserves.

The 800m features the trio of James Minter, Alan Pigfold and Steven Pogue with all three capable of reaching the final and gaining a medal in the right tactical race.

Gavin Hill Gavin Hill (born in Okato December 11, 1965, New Zealand) was a rugby league and rugby union player, who has resided in Wellington for the last 10 years.

He was a flanker and number eight in rugby and then a prop/second row in league when he switched codes in 1991.
, last year's intermediate discus title holder, will compete in the senior ranks this time round and with suitable wind conditions could flip the 1.75kg platter out to 50m.

Samantha Hart is the sole senior girl this year and again competes over 800m.

There are only four intermediate boys selected but it is a high quality section.

Scott Henderson smashed Anthony Borsumato's North of England 400m hurdle record earlier in the regional round and will want to emulate the Teesside Olympian by taking the schools title.

 is also North of England champion and an English Schools cross country international and goes over 1500m.

Teesside's top two sprinters, Ben Wilron and Louis McElwee, race over 100m.

McElwee won the athlete of the meeting award in last week's NTAL meeting on Merseyside.

The intermediate girls team features Debbie Forster, who is entered in the 300m hurdles and will be looking to follow in Commonwealth Games Commonwealth games, series of amateur athletic meets held among citizens of countries in the Commonwealth of Nations. Originated (1930) as the British Empire games, the series is held every four years and is patterned after the Olympic games; women have participated  silver medalist Allison Curbishley's footsteps at this level of competition.

Amanda Crow opts for the 300m flat, whilst, interestingly her elder brother, Tyrone, ran for North Yorkshire North Yorkshire, county (1991 pop. 698,800), 3,209 sq mi (8,313 sq km), N England. The county comprises the districts of Craven, Hambleton, Harrogate, Richmondshire, Ryedale, Scarborough, Selby, and York.  in the senior 400m.

Caroline Sellers contested the high jump two years ago but on this occasion teams up with her training partner Faye Winspear over 200m and these two - along with Forster and Crow - make up the relay.

Hannah Conroy is the sole field eventer contesting the shot although she is a good discus and javelin exponent.

The junior boys also include potential medalists.

Yusuf Alio has dominated the 100m in local and Northern events this season and aims to repeat the performances on the national scene with Richard Kilty, a UK age group holder in the past, also going in the 100m.

Adam Allison has made the transition from 100m and 200m specialist to the one lap race and will be looking for a sub-52 second performance.

Andrew McGuire is another good prospect in the 800m whilst Danny Begley has a great stride in the high jump this season.

Joe Corrigan Joseph Thomas Corrigan (born November 18, 1948 in Manchester), is a former football goalkeeper who played for Manchester City and England. He is currently the goalkeeping coach at West Bromwich Albion. Career
Corrigan joined Manchester City as a youth player in 1966.
 completes the line up and has gained selection for the long jump.

He will also team up with the three sprinters for the 4 x 100m relay.

They will be hoping to emulate or better the silver medal of the 1996 junior squad which included Chris Tomlinson - now the region's leading athlete and British long jump record holder both indoors and out.

Chris, from Nunthorpe, will be aiming to clinch his Olympic Games berth this weekend at the trials in Manchester.
