Atherotech Offers Free VAP(R) Cholesterol Tests to Attendees of the American College of Cardiology Meeting March 12-14, 2006.Atherotech:
WHAT: Atherotech is offering clinicians attending the
American College of Cardiology (ACC) 55th Annual
Scientific Session the opportunity to take a complimentary
VAP(R) Test, an expanded cholesterol profile that
identifies more than 90 percent of people at risk for
heart disease -- compared with just 40 percent with the
routine cholesterol test. Atherotech representatives will
perform blood draws on-site, and the comprehensive results
will be available within about 72 hours. Members of the
media also may obtain a complimentary VAP Test by stopping
by Atherotech's booth.
WHY: Cardiovascular disease results in the deaths of more
than 1 million Americans each year. The routine
cholesterol test, which estimates low-density lipoprotein
(LDL) cholesterol, has increasingly come under scrutiny
for its lack of accuracy, especially when patient
triglycerides are elevated, and for measuring LDL values
below 100 mg/dL. The next-generation VAP Test improves the
early diagnosis and treatment of heart disease by directly
measuring all primary, secondary, and emerging cholesterol
risk factors as outlined in the updated National
Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III
(NCEP ATP III) guidelines. In particular, the NCEP has
identified the need for more accurate LDL readings and the
measurement of additional cholesterol factors that improve
risk assessment and promote more-aggressive therapy for
patients at risk for heart disease. Experts agree that
early identification and treatment of heart disease risk
are key to reducing heart attacks and saving lives.
SCHEDULE: VAP Tests will be available at the following
dates and times:
Sunday, March 12: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Monday, March 13: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Tuesday, March 14: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
WHERE: Atherotech's booth, No. 2516, at the American
College of Cardiology 55th Annual Scientific Session in
Atlanta
DETAILS: The VAP Cholesterol Test was named one of "five
tests worth paying for" by The Wall Street Journal. In
addition, Forbes.com selected the VAP Test as one of "ten
ways to live longer." The VAP Test is available nationwide
through national and regional diagnostic laboratories and
is reimbursed by most payors, including Medicare. Samples
are processed in Atherotech's state-of-the-art laboratory
in Birmingham. For more information, visit
