, Matthew Rothschild didn't hesitate to mention that he is an atheist ("Thank You Notes," Note, January issue). I found his casual disclosure of his atheism atheism (ā`thē-ĭz'əm), denial of the existence of God or gods and of any supernatural existence, to be distinguished from agnosticism, which holds that the existence cannot be proved.  courageous and inspiring. How many of us closet nonbelievers could expose so candidly our freedom of conscience?

Since the Holy Inquisition is no longer, our silence has nothing to do with fear. I guess we just don't want to make waves.

If all of us atheists, agnostics, freethinkers freethinkers, those who arrive at conclusions, particularly in questions of religion, by employing the rules of reason while rejecting supernatural authority or ecclesiastical tradition. , and secular humanists came out of our musty closets, I'm sure our religious fellow citizens would allow us to breathe the same fresh air of freedom of opinion that they enjoy. Not only that, but eventually they would come to respect our views as we respect theirs.
