Atempo Time Navigator Protects Digitized Hollywood Movies at EFILM; EFILM Selects Time Navigator to Optimize Storage Resources and Cost-Effectively Manage Thousands of Terabytes.

LAS VEGAS -- Atempo, Inc., the leader in data protection and storage security for trusted information lifecycle management (ILM), today announced that EFILM has selected Atempo Time Navigator to protect thousands of terabytes worth of digital movies. EFILM is the market leader in digitizing Hollywood's films, with most of the major studios relying on EFILM to convert and edit their films in digital format. EFILM's credits include "Superman," "The Producers," "Collateral" and "Sin City." During the editing phase of a movie, a film can grow up to 40 terabytes in size, and at any given time EFILM has about 15 movies in production. To effectively manage this massive amount of data and optimize their storage resources, EFILM turned to Time Navigator.

"Most companies only access about 80 percent of their data on a regular basis, but we access all of our data all the time," said Brian Corpus, data management supervisor at EFILM. "Managing EFILM's enormous data store is a huge challenge. We are constantly on deadline with the studios, and we operate around the clock. Time Navigator plays a big role in our day-to-day operations." With disk and tape storage combined, EFILM stores thousands of terabytes of data, and a typical data restore is 1.3 terabytes in size. Time Navigator's user interface provides EFILM with a fast and easy way to pinpoint individual pieces of data and easily restore that data to any specified storage media.

"We have hundreds of terabytes of online disk storage, but we work on multiple films at the same time and there is no way that all those files can be online simultaneously. Time Navigator allows us the freedom to constantly move inactive data onto tape and active data onto disk," said Bob Eicholz, vice president of corporate development at EFILM. Atempo has worked closely with EFILM to address some of the industry standards issues surrounding digital formatting. In one instance, Atempo developed a special script for laying down tapes in TAR per frame format.
