Atchison wins contract for Washington, D.C. Metro. (Industry News: North America).


Atchison Casting Corp., Atchison, Kansas , announced that its Atchison Steel Casting Steel casting is a manufacturing process in which molten metal is poured into a mold, allowed to solidify within the mold, and then the mold is broken and the solid piece is taken out.  and Machining Div. has received a contract to supply cast steel undercarriages for new mass transit mass transit, public transportation systems designed to move large numbers of passengers. Mass transit refers to municipal or regional public shared transportation, such as buses, streetcars, and ferries, open to all on a
 vehicles to be delivered to WMATA WMATA Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority  (Washington, D.C. Metro).

"Atchison Casting over the last 10 years has been investing in the area of design engineering and support for proprietary product development," said John R. Kujawa, Atchison group vice president. "We continue to experience benefits from this investment and it remains an important factor in our product diversification and our future planning."

The base contract is valued at more than $4 million with options valued at more than $8 million to cover design engineering, manufacture, machining, assembly and shipment. Development activity will commence immediately with prototyping and testing to follow.

"Our customer base, especially the rail vehicle market sector, has asked us to. provide added value to our engineered product supply capabilities," said Timothy M. Zimmer, Atchison vice president of marketing and sales. "A goal of ours is to differentiate ourselves into a full-service single point of contact for our customers."
