Atari brings high-tech woodworking to Silicon Valley: 1984.

In the heart of Silicon Valley, Atari's woodworking plant maintains a high-tech profile in keeping with the tone of the neighborhood, even though its product is cabinets--not computers.

Woodworking is not generally what Atari is known for, but the company opened the plant in Mi[pitas, CA, to better serve the booming electronic games Electronic Games was the first video game magazine published in the United States and ran from 1981 to 1985. Co-founded by Arnie Katz, Joyce Worley and Bill Kunkel, it is unrelated to the subsequent Electronic Gaming Monthly.  market.

"Atari used to buy cabinets from outside vendors, but our fantastic success as an electronic game producer (Atari produces 75% of all arcade games You can also check the Killer List of Videogames.

Thompson, whose resume includes stints with Thomasville and Ethan Allen, helped design the Atari plant. He noted that electronic games have no counterparts in manufacturing. "The closest thing to what we make would be stereo cabinets. This is a new industry. We created the prototype. In our two years of operation, we have taught ourselves a Lot."

Changes along the way have included a highly automated UV silk screen operation that has reduced the number of employees required for printing on wood and glass components from 86 to 12 people. Earlier this year, Atari switched from buying pre-laminated particle-board to doing its own Laminating lam·i·nate

The plant, which produces as many as 600 game cabinets a day, is also equipped with a Giben panel saw, numerically controlled routers from C.O. Porter and an automated Binks spray Line.
