At the Movies: Danny's boy becomes a man; December Boys (12A) Radcliffe leaves his wand behind in coming of age tale.

IT'S HARRY Potter - sorry, Daniel Radcliffe - seen in a new light.

In a deliberate move away from his schoolboy wizard guise - now the world's best selling film franchise - Radcliffe plays an orphaned teenager, teetering on the brink of manhood in a movie set in the Australian out back during the '60s.

Radcliffe certainly has the largest and showiest role of the four young leading cast members.

However, as coming of age stories go, this is a rather gentle and breezy affair, with little turmoil or conflict, and most of the dramatic interludes neatly tied up within minutes.

The lads are labelled the December Boys because they share the same birth month, as decreed by the nuns who look after them in the Catholic convent they call home.

For a rare treat, the boys are invited to venture to the seaside for the summer, leaving behind their fellow outcasts The Outcasts are a fictional criminal organization from the Digital Anvil/Microsoft game Freelancer.

Based on the planet Malta, the Outcasts are the descendants of colonists from the sleeper ship Hispania.
 

Father Scully (Frank Gallacher) drives them to the coast where the lads are placed in the care of retired naval officer NAVAL OFFICER. The name of an officer of the United States, whose duties are prescribed by various acts of congress.
